This session, from the EDUCAUSE 2009 Annual Conference, features reports on two initiatives from the National Science Foundation's DataNet Program. DataNet Observation Network for Earth (DataONE) represents a new virtual organization that will enable new science and knowledge creation through universal access to data about life on earth and the environment that sustains it. The Data Conservancy (DC) embraces a shared vision: data curation is not an end, but rather a means to collect, organize, validate, and preserve data to address the grand research challenges that face society.

The Federal Identity, Credential, and Access Management Roadmap and Implementation Guidance is now publicly available. The purpose of this 220-page document is to outline a common framework for Identity, Credential, and Access Management (ICAM) within the Federal Government and to provide supporting implementation guidance for program managers, leadership, and stakeholders as they plan and execute a segment architecture for ICAM management programs. The Roadmap provides courses of action, planning considerations, and technical solution information across multiple federal programs spanning the disciplines of identity, credential, and access management.

We all create and use information every day. Taking care of that information (in all its many forms) is an effort requiring shared responsibility by each member of a specific community. Just figuring out where to start and what needs to be done can be a time-consuming task.

A new section on Information Security Governance has been developed for the Information Security Guide. Effective institutional governance of the information security function is critical to a successful program. It can be both the "proof of the pudding..." with regard to management commitment and provide necessary guidance when deciding where to allocate scarce resources. RUS and NTIA have released a joint request for information (RFI) regarding certain aspects of the Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP) and the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP). This is the second joint RFI since both programs were established under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Comments, which are due November 30, 2009, are supposed to “inform” the second round of broadband funding. Please see the EDUCAUSE Resource Center for more information on a National Broadband Policy.

The toolkit consolidates and organizates resources around the overarching themes related to information protection. In 2009, the Evolving Technologies Committee discussed cyberinfrastructure and high-performance computing, open source learning management systems, product management, library and information resource management technologies, IT service management, and offered a review of the past 10 years of ETCOM work. What should our focus be this year? Ideas we had, or heard from our audience, are: e-readers, multimedia services/classroom capture/streaming services, e-discovery & cloud computing, virtualization technologies, and a review of how recent economic trends may have impacted evolving technologies. The University of Pennsylvania's Information Systems and Computing (ISC) division recently announced its successful implementation institution-wide of Domain Name Security Extensions (DNSSEC) technology. The upenn.edu DNS zone was signed with DNSSEC in early August 2009. Penn is part of an Internet2 and EDUCAUSE community of early adopters of DNSSEC technology and is the first U.S. university to implement institution-wide.
