Meeting Purpose

The third NLII Focus Group Session will be held September 15 at The University of Central Florida in Orlando. The discussion will center on how transformation can be sustained through expanded faculty involvement/support and assessment. This discussion is being framed, in part, by the work done in the previous two Focus Group Sessions. The NLII Web site will be updated on a continuing basis with new information emerging from the February 2000 and June 2000 Focus Group Sessions. We hope to see you at a future NLII event.

Homework Assignments

1. Read the article by Barbara Truman-Davis, Director, Course Development & Web Services, University of Central Florida: "Support for Online Teaching and Learning" [PDF 171 KB]
2. Read the attached final draft of a white paper by Paul Hagner, NLII Fellow: "Interesting Practices and Best Systems in Faculty Engagement and Support"[PDF 95 KB]
3. Visit a few of the web sites given in the paper to get a sense of what an "integrated technology attitude" is. (We suggest Delaware, UCF and Wake Forest might be good examples.) Think about what your institution's approach is to supporting teaching and learning. How systematic, integrated and scalable is that approach?
4. Read the attached draft of a white paper by Lev Gonick, CTO, California State University-Monterey Bay: "Don't Try This at Home: Some Pre-Conditions for Institutional Transformation" [PDF 32 KB]

Based on your reading of this paper, think about the following questions from the agenda:

1. Where is your institution on the readiness continuum?
2. How did it get there?
3. Where does it need to be?
4. How can you help move it there? What's the one thing you will do as soon as you get back, to start moving your institution along the continuum?
5. What demands will your institution face in 3 - 5 years? Is it ready? How can you help your institution get ready?
