Colleges Choose SunGard Higher Education to Help Expand Online LearningBlended and Online Programs Help Colleges Increase Offerings and Contain Costs While Enhancing Student Learning Outcomes MALVERN, Pa, August 31, 2009 — In the interest of expanding their online presence, a half dozen colleges recently contracted with SunGard Higher Education for support in offering hybrid and Web-based programs as well as enhancing their online course management systems. West Los Angeles College and Cuyahoga Community College both have engaged SunGard Higher Education for assistance in developing online programs. Renewing academic contracts with the company were College of Southern Nevada, Montgomery College, and San Juan College. In addition, Community College of Baltimore County contracted for additional academic support. Recent economic conditions and trends have put pressure on institutions of higher education to increase capacity, reach new learners, improve access, generate new revenue streams and improve retention. SunGard Higher Education is leveraging its existing academic expertise to help institutions overcome these challenges. The company expanded its support of academics earlier this year with a focus on broadening the portfolio of products and services that facilitate teaching and learning, enable student success and retention and support scholarly research. “We’re seeing more colleges and universities interested in moving to an online or hybrid environment,” said Andy Cooley, senior vice president, strategy and product management for academics at SunGard Higher Education. “Many of the institutions coming to us have tried to launch online programs on their own, but because they may not have the necessary resources, or because they are unable to dedicate the resources to achieve their desired goals, they turn to us for support.” A Department of Education analysis released in June 2009 reported that students who took all or part of their instruction in an online environment, performed better, on average, than those students taking the same courses in a classroom environment. The report also stated that those students learning in a hybrid environment, combining online and classroom instruction, performed best of all. Mr. Cooley noted that SunGard Higher Education provides institutions with a number of distinctive solutions to help develop, launch and manage online programs, including: institutional readiness assessments, online program design and development, marketing (lead generation and conversion), student and faculty support, technology infrastructure management and support (including CMS/LMS migration and support), and student retention services.
