EDUCAUSE, the association for information technology in higher education, has just published The Tower and The Cloud: Higher Education in the Age of Cloud Computing. Edited by Richard N. Katz, with contributions from key IT leaders, this book considers the social and economic impact of technological advances on higher education.

EDUCAUSE President Diana G. Oblinger said, "In The Tower and the Cloud, Richard Katz and his fellow authors describe the emergence of this 'technology cloud' and the implications it has for higher education. The authors move beyond cliché to the substantive issues that will shape change in colleges and universities."

The Tower and The Cloud tackles such questions as "How are 'cloud' technologies and applications already affecting us?" "What does that say about how they are likely to evolve and impact us in the future?" "What might colleges, universities, and higher education overall look like as a result?" "What role should technology play in meeting shifting demands in higher education?"

The book’s contributors include respected Australian, European, and U.S. thought leaders such as Bryan Alexander, Yochai Benkler, Glyn Davis, Larry Faulkner, Ira Fuchs, Clifford A. Lynch, Malcolm Read, and Bradley C. Wheeler.

The entire book is available free in PDF format. Additional print copies of the book can be ordered here.
