Having received publishing awards for several successive years, EDUCAUSE Review, the flagship magazine of EDUCAUSE, the association for information technology in higher education, continued its winning streak in 2009 by recently garnering four major awards in three national and international publication competitions. Of these latest honors, EDUCAUSE President Diana Oblinger said: “EDUCAUSE takes great pride in the tradition of quality and success that Publisher/Editor Teddy Diggs has established with EDUCAUSE Review. The magazine is a significant component of the association’s efforts to engage and inform the higher education community on the major IT challenges facing it. This latest round of recognition further validates the effectiveness of EDUCAUSE Review in accomplishing this mission.”

Conducted in cooperation with the University of Missouri School of Journalism, the Magnum Opus Awards evaluate publications on the basis of content, design, and marketing strategy. Repeating its 2007 win, EDUCAUSE Review was awarded the 2009 Gold Award for Best Association Publication. This honor recognizes publications for comprehensive achievement across all editorial and design elements. The Review’s winning entry was based on its November/December 2008 annual conference issue, which highlighted the association’s new strategic direction and focus areas.

In the same competition, EDUCAUSE Review was honored with the Silver Award for Best Special-Topic Issue for its September/October 2008 "Back to (Virtual) School" issue. The publications receiving awards in this category were recognized for their success in engaging and educating their readers on the particular topic in question.

The “Back to (Virtual) School” issue also served as the basis for the Review’s 2009 APEX and Tabbie awards.

The APEX Annual Awards for Publication Excellence, one of the largest publication competitions with nearly 3,800 entries, are judged on "excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and the success of the entry—in the opinion of the judges—in achieving overall communications effectiveness and excellence." The “Back to (Virtual) School” issue was recognized as meeting these criteria with an Award of Excellence for Feature Series Writing.

EDUCAUSE Review was recognized by the Trade, Association, and Business Publications International (TABPI) organization with a Tabbie Bronze Award in the Special Section category. In extending this honor to the Review’s “Back to (Virtual) School” issue, the judges noted the value of the nontraditional reporting techniques reflected in the publication.

EDUCAUSE Review takes a broad look at current developments and trends in information technology, how they may affect the college or university as an institution, and what they mean for higher education and society. In addition to EDUCAUSE members, the magazine's audience consists of presidents and chancellors, senior academic and administrative leaders, non-IT staff, faculty in all disciplines, librarians, and corporate leaders. The magazine has a print circulation of 22,000 and receives more than 50,000 hits per month online.

Past publishing honors received by the magazine include previous Magnum Opus, APEX, Tabbie, and Ozzie awards, as well as honors from the Colorado Society for Association Executives; the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington, D.C.; and PRINT Regional Design Annual.
