Greg Jackson Chosen as EDUCAUSE VP for Policy and Analysis

August 26, 2009, Washington, D.C.---EDUCAUSE, the association for information technology in higher education, announces the appointment of Greg Jackson, vice president and chief information officer for the University of Chicago, as EDUCAUSE vice president for policy and analysis.

Jackson photoJackson has served as chief information officer for one of the nation’s leading research universities for the last thirteen years, following four years as director of academic computing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Before coming to MIT, Jackson served on the education faculties of both Stanford and Harvard and as a lecturer in public policy at the Kennedy School of Government. During his faculty years, Jackson undertook extensive higher education policy research on topics such as the success of developing institutions receiving Title III funding, the impact of financial aid on how different kinds of students decide whether to enter college, and the reactions of California community colleges to the Proposition 13 tax-limitation initiative. He also taught several Harvard management-development programs targeted at various sectors in traditional and nontraditional higher education, and in similar programs aimed at higher education administrators in Latin America.

Jackson recently served as lead higher education representative for the U.S. Department of Education’s negotiated rulemaking process on the peer-to-peer provisions of the 2008 Higher Education Opportunity Act. On behalf of the higher education community, he worked with representatives of the media industries and the Department of Education to frame proposed rules for implementing those provisions. Jackson has also held many leadership positions where the intersection of higher education policy and IT has figured prominently, including service on the boards of directors for EDUCAUSE, Internet2, National LambdaRail, and the Seminars on Academic Computing; and membership on committees and task forces for the National Research Council, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the Association of American Universities, and the Association of Research Libraries.

Of Jackson’s appointment, EDUCAUSE President and CEO Diana Oblinger said, “Greg Jackson brings an unparalleled mix of knowledge, experience, and leadership to the role of EDUCAUSE vice president for policy and analysis. On his acceptance of the appointment, Jackson said, “I’m looking forward to working with colleagues at EDUCAUSE, in colleges and universities, in other associations, in government, and elsewhere to ensure that we all make the best possible use of information technology to enhance higher education, and especially that policy at all levels advances that goal.”

Jackson holds a doctorate of education from Harvard and a bachelor of science in engineering and history from MIT. He assumes his responsibilities as EDUCAUSE vice president starting September 14. He will work primarily from the EDUCAUSE Washington office.
