John Voloudakis
ECAR Research Fellow

John Voloudakis is an ECAR Research Fellow, formerly a founding member of Cap Gemini Ernst & Young's Higher Education consulting practice. John served as a core team member and co-author of the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) study of ERP in Higher Education. Previously, he worked in CGE&Y's healthcare practice, where he provided technology solutions to academic medical centers, health insurers, and technology companies. He also spent five years at Harvard University as an IT Manager. John holds a BA in International Relations from Tufts University, and a Masters in Business Administration from Boston University.

Jack J. Suess
CIO, Office of Information Technology, University of Maryland Baltimore County

Jack Suess has spent his career at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), progressing from student consultant to CIO during the last 22 years. He spent the first 17 years leading the systems programming and network engineering group, was named director in 1997, and CIO in 2001. During that time he led projects that developed the Unix infrastructure on campus, designed the campus network infrastructure, and led the campus Web development strategy. He was principal investigator for UMBC's vBNS award, is an active participant in the Internet2 Early Adopters Middleware Initiative, and co-chairs the EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Security Task Force. The EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) study of IT security in higher education portrays an industry that is struggling to secure a culturally open environment against the rising tide of threats posed both from within and without higher education. This session will summarize key survey findings regarding IT security technologies implemented by higher education institutions. It will also introduce a new Effective Security Practices Guide developed by the EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Computer and Network Security Task Force that contains resources on network and host vulnerability assessment, security architecture design, network and host security implementation, virus and intrusion detection, incident handling and response, and encryption and authentication.
