Events Related to Identity Management by Month

Small schools typically have fewer IT staff and resources to address a business challenge and need to think creatively about how to support the growing number of applications their constituents are requesting. Building cyberinfrastructure is particularly challenging, given the problems with scaling investments in technology. Using services provided by another organization is an attractive option, but periodically sending files of personally identifiable information to off-campus service providers so they can manage the accounts is risky. Federated identity management and solutions such as Shibboleth single sign-on and federating software can be used in these instances to enable campuses to streamline the technical management of accounts and maintain control of personal data while keeping the access decision in the hands of the service provider. Attendees of this seminar will leave with the federated identity value proposition, technology overview, strategies for implementation, and next steps for their campus.

Join us at the working group meeting to review the group's activities and to brainstorm hot topics (and hot solutions!) for your identity management initiatives, from beginners to experts.

Enterprise authorization requires the management of group, role, and privilege information to ensure consistent access policy across applications. This session will compare and contrast how multiple institutions have implemented this infrastructure and offer an initial view into shared practices for access management.

Librarians look to provide users with an integrated browsing experience across an increasingly complex set of distributed services, from both on and off campus. The InCommon Library/Shibboleth project worked to identify current problems and explore how using a Federated Identity approach (the Shibboleth system) could address these problems and provide additional functionality.

As demanded by our ERP implementation schedule, PGCC created a comprehensive information classification scheme and the associated access rights and privileges in time for our president's cabinet and college attorney to approve and have implemented. A groundswell of activity has occurred during 2008 in identity and access management. Come hear participants in the U.S. InCommon federation discuss their approaches to scaling and managing partnerships throughout the higher education enterprise and with commercial, state, regional, and federal government activities.

The session will discuss the results of the recent ARL survey on the management of public computing, including the demand for and scale of library public computing, staffing and organizational structures, budgeting and upgrades, security, authentication and authorization, policies, and assessment and measurements of success. Notable innovations in library public computing will be highlighted.

Emerging trends point to using federated identity to address challenging issues in supporting access to off-campus services. Where should this technology fit in a registrar's service strategy? Registrar and IT panelists will discuss new partnerships and initiatives in this area and describe exciting opportunities for sourcing and supporting student services.
