Kno a New Type of TextbookCreated by Robert H. McDonald (Indiana University Bloomington) on August 22, 2011
Just putting this out there. I know there are many types of online text books and platforms for using the textbooks both via the web and through iOS apps that are making the rounds but I heard of a new one that seems to be working at network scale pretty well (nice Web features, iPad App, Facebook App, and Journal App). The company is called Kno and they have a pretty interesting product that offers some cool features, including facebook integration, iPad app and one of their newest components, a 3D visualization. The 3D visualization component both online and in the iPad are pretty sharp. Kno etextbooks - http://www.kno.com/home 3D Demo - http://www.kno.com/features#mod=features&act=kno3d

Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) Announces Beta SprintCreated by Robert H. McDonald (Indiana University Bloomington) on May 23, 2011
The DPLA announced today their Beta Sprint. I was just at a meeting with this group in Amsterdam and I am very intrigued by this type of community outreach within their planning process. I am hopeful that many of us working in Digital Library areas and even areas outside of this will be interested in proposing something for this endeavor. To paraphrase a bit from their call: The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) Steering Committee is delighted to announce today a Beta Sprint that aims to surface innovations that could play a part in the building of a digital public library.

Mobile Learning as an Evolving Technology, Surprise SurpriseCreated by Rochelle Rodrigo (Old Dominion University) on February 25, 2011
Based on all the hub-bub around Mobile Learning, no one should be especially surprised that it is one of the foci of the Evolving Technologies committee; however, we do not profess to be experts (although some of the group may be close). Anyhow…we’d love to kick up some discussion about Mobile Learning. Specifically, we’d love for people to 1. What do you consider a "mobile technology"? Toss out both definitions of “mobility” as well as specific examples of mobile technologies (smart phones, smart pens, netbooks, etc.). 2. What do mobile technologies enable in Higher Education? How do mobile technologies improve our core mission?
What do you want to know about Evolving TechnologiesCreated by Rochelle Rodrigo (Old Dominion University) on January 12, 2011
The Evolving Technologies committee (ETCOM) has been working hard (reading and dialoging). We're currently developing an outline of categories with which to guide our writing about evolving technologies. We hope you might help! The following outline is developed after looking at prior reports of ETCOM, Horizon Report, etc.
Tablets Going to Deluge Campuses?Created by Jennifer Sparrow (Virginia Tech) on January 10, 2011
Josh Fishman of The Chronicle of Higher Education reported from CES this week that tablets are going to be a major player on college and university campuses. Fishman reported that Walt Mossberg's keynote mentioned not only Apple's iPad but a growing number of tablets are hitting the market and becoming real competitors to traditional laptop computers.
Unboxing of the Galaxy TabCreated by Stephen G. Landry (Seton Hall University) on January 5, 2011
At Seton Hall University we have an ongoing iPad pilot project with our School of Graduate Medical Education. This has been quite successful, in large part because there are a number of iPad applications that are supporting students' clinical work in local hospitals. This has followed several years where our Teaching, Learning and Technology Roundtable's (TLTR) Emerging Technologies Committee has been piloting the use of smartphones to support instruction both in and out of the classroom. This spring the TLTR Emerging Technologies Committee is looking to expand the exploration of highly mobile devices to support instruction with additional iPads as well as some of the new Andriod tablets coming on the market. Our Em Tech committee has acquired a few Samsung Galaxy Tabs for evaluation.
Does the end of educational discounts at Linden Labs equal more growth of Open Source Virtual Worlds?Created by Jennifer Sparrow (Virginia Tech) on November 12, 2010
News of Linden Labs ending the educational discount for lands within SecondLife has implications for schools that are using the virtual worlds. (How) Is this affecting your institution? OpenSim, an open source virtual world, presents its own set of issues for storage, support and security. The costs of buying, hosting and supporting servers may be similar to the costs of Linden Lab's built in support. Is your institution looking at open source virtual worlds? Are your faculty teaching in virtual world settings?

Hi All, Just putting out another note about this for all of you who are ignite presentation experts and are interested in our theme of You 3.0. This year the Evolving Technology Committee is adopting the theme of “You 3.0" and is exploring the relationship between evolving technologies and individual career development. For our 2010 annual presentation, we want to present five 5-minute Ignite-style presentations which describe deploying a new technology or managing technology change in the context of its impact on your career, management style, and/or professional development. See our Google spreadsheet for more information and to sign up: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dFlHNjhzemRjNGFXNlJvaWg...

iPhone & iPad Application Development and DeploymentCreated by Jennifer Sparrow (Virginia Tech) on March 25, 2010
Robert McDonald posted the sales figures for the iPad on this blog earlier this month (120,000+ the first week). As the iPad and iPhone (and mobile devices in general) become more pervasive, I am curious as to the licensing that universities are using as they are developing and deploying apps. My understanding is that some institutions are using commercial software and therefore do not sign developer agreements with Apple. I have heard from institutions that are having student employees procure a developer's license. Finally, I hear often that colleges and universities are struggling to sign agreements with Apple due to the contractual language. What are your institutions doing? How do you address the distribution (through iTunes specifically) of branded apps? Have you reached an institution-wide agreements with Apple? What challenges did you face and how did your institution address those issues?
Apple iPad Begins Pre-Orders and Early Estimates are at 120,000Created by Robert H. McDonald (Indiana University Bloomington) on March 18, 2010
I have been reading this article from Fortune Apple 2.0 Blog about pre-order estimates on the Apple iPad. While these are just estimates, what struck me about the estimates were that there was a heavy lean towards the 802.11 Wi-Fi model and that orders seemed equally split between the various storage options (16, 32, 64 GB). The piece that really got me thinking here was in terms of our campus wireless canopies and whether the iPad will become as ubiquitous as the iPhone, and if so does this mean students will now have a third 802.11 device. In my own observations, it appears that most students now have the laptop or netbook as well as the iPhone or iPod touch. Will the iPad become the third ubiquitous Wi-Fi device on our networks and if so will 802.11N coverage be enough to fill this need? Comments?
eBooks: Beyond PDF of the TextbookCreated by Jennifer Sparrow (Virginia Tech) on March 2, 2010
This blog post started as an exploration of eReaders and institutional roll-out issues. As you can see, it evolved into larger questions about eTextbooks and eReaders. Any feedback is appreciated. EBooks are included in the most recent Horizon Report. The rise of importance of this issue can be attributed to an increase in electronic readers and increased availability of titles in a digital format. Certainly the increase in textbook costs and awareness of “green” education are driving this as well.
