Biography

Brian D. Voss leads LSU’s information technology organization as it develops key IT infrastructure and services in support of advancing the Flagship Agenda of the University. Voss was appointed as LSU's first Vice Chancellor for Information Technology in April 2008, having been appointed LSU's first Chief Information Officer for the A&M campus in April 2005; he leads LSU’s Information Technology Services (ITS) organization, the unit responsible for operation, support, security and policy for of the extensive computing, network, and application services functions that support student learning, faculty teaching, research, administration, and the broader IT infrastructure in place at the Baton Rouge campus. He maintains strong partnerships with the Center for Computation & Technology (CCT), and the Louisiana Board of Regents, in building the infrastructure and reputation that are bringing LSU to a position of national prominence in the areas of campus information technology infrastructure and services, high performance optical networking, and research computing. Brian also was a co-principal investigator on the successful LONI/LSU proposal to the National Science Foundation for its “High Performance Computing Operations in Support of Science and Engineering Research and Education” program award in 2007.

Brian has nearly 25 years of leadership experience in the information technology field -- both in higher education and in the private sector -- spanning operations and production services, application development, user support, research IT enablement and telecommunications and networking. He is active in EDUCAUSE and ECAR, as well as Internet2, SURA, and ACUTA; In July 2006 he became Louisiana Board of Regent's representative to National LambdaRail, and servied the State in that role through August 2007, when he took an elected seat on Internet2's key Architecture and Operations Advisory Council. He is part of the Louisiana Opticial Network Initiative (LONI) Management Council, and has oversight over LONI's operations and its Executive Director. He is a member of ACUTA's Higher Education Advisory Panel, a member of Campus Technology's C-Level Advisory Board, a member of the SURA IT Steering Committee, and also serves on the Microsoft Higher Education Advisory Group.

Brian spent nearly ten years of his career in information technology user support roles and was the architect of the widely-acclaimed Leveraged Support Model. He also led groundbreaking initiatives in enterprise software licensing, life-cycle funding of institutional desktop and departmental IT resources, protection of both the institution and its affiliates from identity theft and credit fraud, and in building campus, regional, and national IT optical networking infrastructure . He is an oft-published author of papers and articles, and oft-quoted in the media for views and his vision on a variety of IT subjects. He has presented at dozens of technical and leadership conferences over the past decade.

Brian was previously the Associate Vice President for Information Technology (Telecommunications) in the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology at Indiana University. He was Executive Investigator on IU's Teragrid grant, and also served as Chief Operating Officer for the Pervastive Technology Labs at Indiana University.
