Formerly a British diplomat, has a BA from Cambridge University in Oriental Studies and an MA and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in Political Science. Research interests include Middle East politics (mainly Turkey and the Arab world), religion and politics, cultural authoritarianism, and media. Member of the National Advisory Board of the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE).
