Biography

Irvin R. Katz is Senior Research Scientist at Educational Testing Service. Over the past four years, he helped lead the design and development of ETS's iSkills assessment (formerly ICT Literacy Assessment), a simulation-based assessment of research and communication skills. This work involved close collaboration with Information Literacy faculty and academic librarians from across the U.S. Since its initial release in 2005, Dr. Katz led several validation studies of the iSkills assessment and coordinated several others conducted at collaborating colleges and universities. In addition to publications on Information Literacy and ICT Literacy, he has presented on the iSkills assessment to many organizations in the U.S., including the American Library Association, National Forum for Information Literacy, National Academies of Science IT Fluency Workshop, EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative, and the 2006 Information Literacy Summit on American Competitiveness in the Internet Age held in Washington, DC.

Irvin received his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University. In addition to Educational Testing Service, he has worked at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and was Associate Professor of Psychology at George Mason University.
