Rafael AlvaradoAssociate Director of SHANTI Charlottesville, Virginia UNITED STATES Rafael AlvaradoBiographyRafael Alvarado is Associate Director of SHANTI at the University of Virginia. (See http://shanti.virginia.edu) Before coming to SHANTI, he was Director of Academic Technology at Dickinson College. Rafael received his Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Virginia, where he worked for the award-winning Teaching + Technology Initiative. At Princeton University, he served as technical liaison to the Provost's office, helping to found the McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning as well as the Educational Technology Center. Rafael also spent a year at the University of South Carolina as Executive Director of Teaching & Technology Services. As an adjunct faculty member of the departments of anthropology at Princeton and Dickinson, Rafael has lectured on the anthropology and ethnography of computing, viewing the computer as core metaphor, contested tool, and central artifact in the investigation of postmodern culture. He has also taught courses, given talks, and published on the subject of digital scholarship in the areas of art history, archaeology, and philology.
