Biography

Dr. Teshia Young Roby is an assistant professor in the College of Education and Integrative Studies at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Dr. Roby teaches graduate students in the Educational Multimedia program; pre-services and in-service teachers in the Teacher Education program; and undergraduate students within the Ethnic and Women’s Studies program. Dr. Roby is a Provost’s Teacher Scholar and has served as the faculty consultant and co-facilitator for the Teaching and Learning with Technology Faculty Learning Community at Cal Poly Pomona, a program funded and sponsored by Teacher Quality Enhancement Grant at Cal Poly Pomona where faculty learned how to integrate Web 2.0 technologies such as wikis, blogs, YouTube, Second Life, Facebook, and Skype into their courses to engage their students. Dr. Roby’s overarching research agenda is one of exploring opportunities for cultural identity inclusion in the classroom, particularly on the post-secondary level, and of investigating and examining technologies and digital media that promote communication, collaboration, and cohesiveness. She is interested in the classroom implications of digital storytelling, from both the teacher and student perspectives (See Dr. Roby’s OPUS Collective project at http://opuscollective.org). Dr. Roby’s research agenda also include implementation of successful active learning and group collaboration opportunities in online and virtual teaching and learning environments; effective educational uses of collaborative, innovative, and Web 2.0 technologies; the identification of elements of successful online teaching and learning processes; inclusion of culture as a pedagogical philosophy; and the use of multiple instructional design models during development of course content.

Prior to her current appointment, Dr. Roby was the program lead for the Designing Online Learning-Centered Environments (DOLCE) program at Cal Poly Pomona. The DOLCE program employs a faculty-team approach to course redesign of medium- and large-enrollment courses into blended and online formats and is jointly sponsored by the Cal Poly Pomona Faculty Development Center and the Instructional and Information Technology division. Dr. Roby’s previous academic experience also includes an educational technologies research faculty position at the Georgia Institute of Technology and an appointment as a pre-service and in-service teacher adjunct instructor in the College of Education at Georgia State University.

Dr. Roby earned a PhD in Instructional Technology at Georgia State University. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Clemson University, an MBA from the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, and a Master’s in Instructional Technology.
