Social Media Participation Guidelines

These participation guidelines are intended to maintain the professional focus and educational value of these conference interactions. The guidelines reflect the wishes of the primary users and help to maintain a respectful atmosphere. Your observance of them will enhance the quality of the experience for all.

  • Please be respectful of your speakers and the community as you are posting comments.
  • Session discussions are provided to facilitate interaction with your colleagues. Speakers and EDUCAUSE staff will not be regularly monitoring the site.
  • Queries and dialogue should be focused on conference content related topics and activities, and conducted in a courteous, professional tone.
  • Obscenity or profanity and inflammatory language are not acceptable, nor is the use of the discussion strings to conduct or forward contests, pyramid schemes, or chain letters.
  • EDUCAUSE reserves the right to remove inappropriate posts and/or block users who repeatedly violate these guidelines.

Endorsements

Endorsements are acceptable if made in the context of a request for information or sharing of an experience. When the endorsement comes from a representative of a corporate member, any mention of company products or services should be in the context of a reasonable answer to a question posed by another subscriber and should not be blatantly commercial; such postings should include the identifying signature of the person posting the message.

Job Postings

EDUCAUSE maintains a Career Center web resource in which members may post job openings; all interested parties are welcome to browse the listings.

Media Representatives

Media representatives are welcome to pose questions and to participate in discussions intended for the EDUCAUSE Annual Conference community. Participation is encouraged using the following guidelines:

  • Media professionals may not ask questions or invite separate follow-up to the full string expressly for the purpose of soliciting contributors to pending articles or other editorial content. NOTE: This guideline does not preclude media or corporate representatives from following up directly with individual subscribers who post to a list.
  • All postings to a discussion by a media representative should clearly identify the representative's media status and affiliation, i.e., not just through a signature block.
  • No posting may be quoted without the explicit consent of the poster. Such consent should be requested individually and may be established with an e-mail to that effect from the author.
  • When content is quoted or referred to in an article, or when a story is based in whole or in part on particular discussions, media representatives are requested to note that the source was an EDUCAUSE 2011 discussion thread.

Promotional Messages and Advertising

EDUCAUSE 2011 session discussions and backchannel communications are networking and educational in nature and not intended for promotional announcements, advertising, product-related press releases, or other commercial use. Corporate participants are asked to use the general #EDUCAUSE11 Twitter stream to promote conference activities only. These postings should not be excessive in nature.

Surveys

Informal professional opinion or use surveys are acceptable but should be brief and should encourage off-line responses. In keeping with the open spirit of the discussions, you are encouraged to share a synopsis of any information you gather.

EDUCAUSE Staff Oversight

EDUCAUSE staff will be monitoring the #EDU11 Twitter stream; however, individual session discussions will not be regularly monitored by EDUCAUSE or speakers.
