Meet the EDUCAUSE Research Organization
EDUCAUSE research efforts include data, research, and analytics services that are provided through the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) and the EDUCAUSE Core Data Service (CDS) under the leadership of Susan Grajek, EDUCAUSE Vice President for Data, Research, and Analytics. Research initiatives are guided by EDUCAUSE members, the EDUCAUSE Board of Directors, the EDUCAUSE Executive Team, the research Fellowship, and various advisory groups and expert panels. Vice President for Data, Research, and Analytics | | Dr. Susan Grajek is the EDUCAUSE Vice President for Data, Research, and Analytics. Before joining EDUCAUSE, she spent over 25 years at Yale University. She served as Deputy Relationship Manager in Yale's Information Technology Services (ITS) division. In that role, she oversaw ITS strategy, planning, relationship management, and project execution for the university's academic administration and general counsel. Before that, she held the position of Senior Director of ITS Strategy and Planning, in which she coordinated development of Yale's first IT strategic plan and led the creation and execution of the university's current IT security strategy. She also led the change management team for the formation of Yale's first shared business services center. Her tenure with the university included other IT management and leadership positions, such as Senior Director of ITS Client Support and Director of Communications and Technical Support for ITS functions serving the Yale University School of Medicine. Grajek, who earned a PhD in research psychology from Yale, held a faculty appointment in the Yale University School of Medicine's Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, where she started teaching a data management course in 1996. Her work with the School of Medicine included creating and leading its IT research department. Her expertise encompasses the design and execution of research in management, the behavioral sciences, and public policy, as well as statistical analysis. She also has an established background in IT planning, assessment, and metrics, as well as IT operational leadership. | Research Fellows Rhonda Epper, PhD Term: July 2011–June 2014 | Dr. Rhonda M. Epper is Assistant Provost for the Colorado Community College System, where her responsibilities include development of academic innovations across the system's 13 community colleges; policy direction for online learning; transfer and articulation issues; and research/planning for academic affairs. Previously, she managed CCCOnline and other system-wide consortial initiatives, such as the enterprise learning management system, 24/7 help desk, and digital textbook programs. Epper also served at Community College of Denver, where she led numerous online learning programs. She has also served as a consultant to the California State University, WICHE, WCET, ECS, SREB, and the League for Innovation in the Community College. Epper has published numerous articles, policy reports, and book chapters on topics related to the use of technology in higher education, including "Technology Solutions for Developmental Math" (with Elaine Baker), published by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, January 2009. Research Interests - Learning lab-based sciences at a distance: New technologies using robotics and remote instrumentation allow students to conduct experiments in physics, chemistry, and biology without coming to a traditional campus-based science lab.

| Sean Jackson, DMA Term: July 2011–June 2014 | Dr. Sean Jackson is Chief Technology Officer at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He has spent the majority of the past 20 years building and leading high-performing IT organizations in the higher education and nonprofit sectors. During this time, he has had the honor to serve as a senior IT leader at Yale University, the Yale School of Medicine, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, where he supported advanced biomedical research and medical education. Most recently, he served as the CIO at the United Way of Connecticut, where he was responsible for partnering with the State of Connecticut to deliver large, complex health and human services programs to state residents. In between his work at Yale and the United Way, he also built and led the Global Project Management Office for Stanley Black & Decker, where he was able to indulge his passion for Lean while working with senior management to integrate a $500M acquisition in France and turn around a factory in Texas. Jackson is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. Research Interests - Lean Six Sigma in nonprofit and higher education domains

| Fred Jacobs, PhD Term: July 2011–June 2014 | Dr. Fred Jacobs is Professor of Education and Director of the Doctoral Program in the School of Education, Teaching, and Health (SETH) at American University. He joined the university in 1985 and has also served as University Dean of Faculties, Affirmative Action Officer for Faculty, Dean of the School of Education, and Director of the American University Press. Jacobs was Managing Editor of The Review of Higher Education, published by the Association for the Study of Higher Education from 1986 to 1990. Before joining American University, he was Provost and Academic Vice President at John Jay College and Assistant Dean for Programs in Professional Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he also served as Instructor in Education, Director of the Institute for Educational Management (IEM), and Director of the Institute for the Management of Lifelong Education (MLE). During 2007, Jacobs served as Senior Fulbright Scholar at A.I. Cuza University in Iasi, Romania, the oldest private university in the country. His two most recent books are Serving and Supporting Adult Learners in Higher Education (with Stephen Hundley) (San Francisco: Jossey Bass, 2010) and Employee Engagement: Identifying, Strengthening, and Maintaining Workforce Loyalty, Second Edition (with Stephen Hundley and Mark Drizin) (Phoenix: World at Work Publishers, 2007). He has authored numerous research publications and presentations about nontraditional and adult learners. Research Interests - The relationship between postsecondary institutions and student markets

| Joshua Kim, PhD Term: July 2011–June 2013 | Dr. Joshua Kim was originally appointed as an ECAR Fellow in 2009. He is the Director of Learning and Technology for the Master of Health Care Delivery Science program at Dartmouth College. Partnering with the MHCDS team and colleagues throughout the college, Kim is responsible for course design, faculty training, and technical infrastructure for this best-in-class hybrid (online/on-ground) program. Previously, Kim worked as a Senior Instructional Technologist and adjunct faculty member at Dartmouth, and he has extensive experience teaching both online and on-ground courses. Kim is an EDUCAUSE Research Fellow, has a PhD in demography and sociology from Brown University, and writes the Technology and Learning blog at Inside Higher Ed ( http://www.insidehighered.com/blogs/technology_and_learning). | Jack McCredie, PhD Term: July 2011–June 2012 | Dr. Jack McCredie was originally appointed as an ECAR Senior Fellow in 2006. He is Associate Vice Chancellor Emeritus and CIO Emeritus for the University of California, Berkeley. From 1992 through 2005 he led all central computing and communication activities, including the campus data and voice network and support for academic and administrative programs. Previously he directed the External Research Program at Digital Equipment Corporation, and before that he served as President of Educom and Vice Provost for Computing and Planning at Carnegie Mellon University. For many years McCredie was a member of the Internet2 Board of Trustees, the I2 Network Planning and Policy Advisory Council, and a founding member of the board of the Corporation for Education Networking Initiatives in California (CENIC). | Judith A. Pirani Term: July 2011–June 2012 | Judy Pirani was originally appointed as an ECAR Fellow in 2003. She is president of Sheep Pond Associates. Her expertise focuses on educational technology issues. Sample research includes the use of e-learning to improve employee efficiencies and sales demand, the marketability of course management systems for corporate training applications, and website development strategies in higher education and government institutions. She has co-authored several ECAR studies including Wireless Networking in Higher Education, and Supporting E-Learning in Higher Education, as well as more than 50 ECAR case studies and research bulletins. Previously she was Vice President at Lyra Research and Giga Information Group, where she managed worldwide research practices in digital imaging technologies. | Donald Z. Spicer, PhD Term: July 2011–June 2013 | Dr. Donald Z. Spicer was originally appointed as an ECAR Senior Fellow in 2004. He serves as CIO and Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Technology for the 13-institution University System of Maryland. He has considerable experience as a faculty member and academic administrator and previously held CIO positions at the University of Notre Dame and Vanderbilt University. He has made significant contributions to EDUCAUSE, serving as chair of the Current Issues Committee, program chair of the inaugural Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference, and as a member of the Core Data Service Research Task Force and the 2005 Annual Conference Program Committee. He has co-authored ECAR case studies on a wide variety of topics and has co-authored several research bulletins. Research Interests - Mobility

| John Voloudakis Term: July 2011–June 2013 | John Voloudakis was originally appointed as an ECAR Fellow in 2009. He has served the higher education and healthcare industries as a consultant and administrator for over 18 years. He has held leadership positions in the education practices of Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, BearingPoint, and Huron Consulting Group, where he focused on helping institutions get the most from their investments in information technology. Voloudakis also led an information technology department at Harvard University. He has co-authored or contributed to several ECAR studies and research bulletins, and he is a frequent speaker and author on enterprise systems, security, and IT organizational effectiveness.
