The EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) has announced the appointment of Dr. Mark C. Sheehan as an ECAR fellow, effective July 1, 2006.

Sheehan is currently Executive Director for Information Services and Chief Technology Officer for the Montana State University flagship campus in Bozeman, a position he has held since 2000. Prior to that he served as Director of the Montana State University Information Technology Center for four years and a member of the management team of the Indiana University information technology organization for 13 years. In late June, Sheehan will complete a two-year term as chair of the Board of the North West Academic Computing Consortium. Since 2003 he has served on the faculty of the EDUCAUSE Institute Leadership Program. Over the past 15 years Sheehan has contributed numerous articles to CAUSE and EDUCAUSE publications as well as several commercial trade publications. He has made conference presentations, led roundtable discussions, and conducted workshops at EDUCAUSE and SIGUCCS conferences. He served on the EDUCAUSE Current Issues Committee from 1995 to 1998. With Ali Jafari, Sheehan edited Designing Portals: Opportunities and Challenges (2003), a book of essays about Internet portals written by higher education technologists and administrators and a selection of commercial portal vendors.

About Sheehan, EDUCAUSE Vice President Richard Katz said, “Mark Sheehan is one of the most thoughtful CIOs in higher education today, and he is a great writer. ECAR is again fortunate to find a rare individual who has a deep love of higher education, a nuanced understanding of IT, and the ability to communicate this complexity in ways that cause us to learn. We are eager to have Mark join us.”

At ECAR, Sheehan will work on a variety of research studies, case studies, and other ECAR research. He will work in the EDUCAUSE office in Boulder, Colorado.
