General SessionsIf You Give a Student a Computer: Managing the Growing Demand for Digital Learning ContentMonday, January 27, 2003 Patrick McElroy, Founder, Learning Content Exchange, Inc. The advent of mainstream demand for digital learning materials in higher education portends significant impact on many institutional constituencies. Using the metaphor of Laura Joffe Numeroff's popular children's book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie ("If you give a mouse a cookie, he'll want a glass of milk, then a straw, then a napkin, then…"), Mr. McElroy will explore the broad implications of this growing form of learning and learning support on the institution and its resources. Mr. McElroy will propose that institutions have two choices in response to this challenge: a reactive response, where institutions incrementally respond to the growing problem, and a proactive response, where institutions collaborate to address these implications in anticipation of the pervasive role of digital learning content in the future of higher education. NLII Program Review and AnnouncementsTuesday, January 28, 2003 Student Learning Objectives (SLO) and the Transformation of the Learning ExperienceMonday, January 27, 2003 Debra Friedman, Dean, College of Public Programs, University of Washington The University of Washington has embarked on a project designed to identify learning objectives for its undergraduate learning experiences across the entire university. Educational transformation has been inhibited by the limited suite of metrics available to keep track of student progress. Credits have served as the critical measure of progress; requirements about how many of which kind serve as the rules. The SLO initiative offers an additional set of metrics, one which is designed to enable, rather than restrict, the transformation agenda. The Web front-end for this project represents a significant technological innovation in this arena.
