Defining a Learner-Driven Digital Learning Space

Monday, January 26, 2004
3:20 p.m. - 4:20 p.m. CONSES17

David A. King, Department Head, Oregon State University

NLII Key Theme - Learning Materials, Software & Services

A group of 10 partner organizations focusing on learning resources in Indiana is developing a digital learning space that will serve the needs of learners across the full learner lifecycle, from preschool through K–12, higher education, and into adult lifelong learning. The purpose is to reduce the silo-like separation between K–12, higher education, and other learner segments. A series of 24 focus groups was conducted to identify and validate learner needs and expectations. This presentation will discuss the identified learner needs and connect them with learning space functions. It will include a demonstration of the prototype design for Indiana's Digital Learning Space.

Integrating Learning Design Representations with Faculty Support

Tuesday, January 27, 2004
10:40 a.m. - 11:40 a.m. CONSES27

Tom Carey, Chief Learning Officer - MERLOT, Professor, University of Waterloo

James Dalziel, Director, Macquarie ELearning Centre of Excellence(MELCOE), Macquarie University

Jean Kreis, 2004 NLII Fellow-Web-Based Instruction, Sr. Program Coordinator, Casa Grande Union High School

NLII Key Theme - Learning Materials & Software Specification/Standards Development Projects

Learning design representations, such as those developing within IMS, are often conceived in terms of their application in course management systems and managed learning environments. This session explores how learning design representations can contribute further "upstream" in the teaching and learning process to enhance the value of learning object repositories such as MERLOT, to structure community resource spaces for faculty development, and to enhance tools to support teachers in developing learning activities. The session leaders will discuss how their current projects can contribute to an enhanced role for learning design representations. Session participants will discuss their own needs and related initiatives and explore future steps toward enhanced community resources for learning design.

Planning for Ecological Diversity in New Learning Environments: Interoperability Between Libraries and Course Management Systems

Monday, January 26, 2004
10:40 a.m. - 11:50 a.m. CONSES01

Louis E. King, Managing Producer, Digital Asset Management Systems, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

Brian Nielsen, Project Manager for Faculty Initiatives, Northwestern University

Mary Claire Stewart, Head, Digital Media Services, Northwestern University

NLII Key Theme - New Learning Ecosystems

The wide acceptance of course management systems by our faculties offers technology innovators new opportunities for integrating a variety of information services into the CMS environment. Library services in particular, which complement traditional classroom learning activities, are being recognized as ripe for integration. In an effort to advance such integration opportunities, two working groups within the CIC (the Big Ten universities plus the University of Chicago) have been engaged in dialogue and planning for a regional conference on CMS/library services integration. The Learning Technologies Group (representing CIC IT organizations) and the Digital Library Initiative Overview Committee (representing the CIC libraries) have been working together to plan and execute the conference scheduled for mid-February 2004, with the objective of clarifying working vocabularies and ideas for services among the two communities of practice. This session will present the planning ideas that have informed the upcoming conference, seeking further input from the larger NLII community to further collaboration between library and IT organizations in new designs for library-CMS integration.
