Survival Training for New Managers

Are you a new IT manager? About to move from a technical role to a management position? What do you need to know? Where do you start? How can you move to your new role prepared for the challenges that you will face? This seminar will provide you with practical guidance for dealing with management and leadership challenges and will make you aware of helpful resources that can assist you in your role.

Join us to interact with colleagues from the region and explore the following issues through presentation and discussion:

  1. Management and leadership: What are the differences? How do you lead and manage at the unit level? What is "managing up?"
  2. Organizational change: How do you manage the constant changes that come about in IT organizations? How do you affect change and minimize staff resistence.
  3. Delegation: How to you set goals and delegate to your staff? What is the best way to motivate staff to accomplish goals?
  4. Managing time and priorities: How can you make sure you get the right things done at the right time? Are there ways to manage the inevitable stress and the changes you will experience? How do you keep your life in balance?
  5. Resources: Where can you go when you need help? What kinds of resources are available to you via the Web, professional communities, colleagues, courses, and conferences.

Presenter

Marilu GoodyearMarilu Goodyear
University of Kansas

Marilu Goodyear is a professor in the Public Administration Department of the University of Kansas. She is the former vice provost for information services and the chief information officer for The University of Kansas. In this role, she led all campus-wide software, hardware and networking technology services, printing services, and the KU libraries. Dr. Goodyear holds master's degrees in library and information science and public administration from the University of Missouri, as well as a doctorate in public administration from the University of Colorado. During the past year Dr. Goodyear has worked with EDUCAUSE on leadership programs. Her research areas include electronic information policy development, mentoring, personal effectiveness, and organizational change.
