Information About Research Proposals

Research proposals will be considered from individuals or teams on topics related to information technology administration, general interest, networking, and teaching and learning. In general, research should focus on analytical and empirical questions, incorporating rigorous and often multidisciplinary research methods. Research may be qualitative but is expected to have a significant quantitative dimension. The hallmark of ECAR-sponsored research is practical applicability in higher education. ECAR research objectives may be accomplished through survey methods; focus groups and interviews; and/or analyses of contemporary practices, critical success factors, or emerging technologies, policies, issues, or trends. Analyses that incorporate respondents' findings from other vertical industries to compare attitudes, practices, and policies with those in higher education are encouraged. The distinguishing feature of ECAR studies is that they are research based; therefore, the individuals and organizations submitting proposals must provide evidence of their research depth and, in particular, knowledge of information technology and the management and leadership of higher education. ECAR is seeking to help higher education leaders assess the impact of technology investments on the mission and practices of the college or university enterprise. A majority of ECAR subscribers will represent Carnegie-designated research universities. While ECAR studies will not be restricted in scope to this sector, it is expected that their focus will be weighted to reflect the dominant interests of ECAR subscribers. Similarly, the dominant geographic focus of ECAR studies will be the United States, but incorporation of findings from leading Canadian, Australasian, and European contexts is encouraged.

It is anticipated that studies will result in a final report of 50 to 150 pages, including an executive summary. The ECAR audience will consist of higher education leaders, and a premium is therefore placed on clarity and intellectual accessibility. The use of illustrations, graphs, and diagrams is encouraged. Within the report, authors are asked to identify and analyze the key issues associated with the topic. A description of the methodology used should be included as well as tables and/or appendices detailing the findings. The majority of the report should focus on analysis and interpretation of findings. Again, while many readers of ECAR studies will have the technical backgrounds associated with chief information officers, many will be campus presidents, provosts, or financial officers. A complete bibliography should be part of the final report.

The research subjects in many cases will be the primary stakeholders of EDUCAUSE. It is assumed, therefore, that research plans that involve surveys, interviews, and focus groups will be coordinated closely with ECAR staff.

Please use the ECAR Proposal Format to submit research proposals to ECAR.
