Carl Hutzler is America Online’s director of anti-spam operations, a role he assumed in 2001. Hutzler’s responsibilities include the technical aspects of fighting spam on behalf of AOL’s 30 million members. His team provides real-time analysis and response to the spammer threat through a variety of tools and technologies that, in the past two years, have helped block more than 80 percent of spam that is targeted to AOL customers and reduce spam to AOL addresses by nearly 90 percent. Hutzler also has responsibility for the AOL Postmaster team that provides the interface to outside organizations sending e-mail to AOL and supports a variety of AOL’s legal, policy, and enforcement efforts. Prior to joining AOL in 1997 as a project manager, Hutzler was a network design engineer with Booz, Allen & Hamilton, Inc., a privately held technology consulting firm, where he led a team of network engineers and software developers in designing large-scale enterprise network solutions for major government clients. This presentation will address the size and nature of the spam problem and will describe several current and proposed solutions. AOL uses a variety of tools and technologies to deal with spam. While some of these approaches may be applicable to campus e-mail systems for incoming spam, others may have implications for the design of campus e-mail systems so that outgoing e-mail—especially e-mail being forwarded to alumni and others—won’t be interpreted as spam originating from the campus.
