Steve Schuster joined Cornell in 2003 as director of information technology security. His responsibilities include Cornell identity management, security policy implementation and education, network infrastructure, data protection and monitoring, and security incident response and analysis. Schuster has been instrumental in introducing new security technologies and practices at Cornell that are consistent with a growing number of legal requirements, security threats, and community expectations. Before joining Cornell, he was a division manager of the Information Security Center at AT&T Labs, where his work included cyber-defense monitoring and incident response, intrusion detection systems, secure architecture development, and security auditing. Schuster has also worked on cryptology and large-scale data processing for the defense industry. His security work has included organizations within the U.S. government, in Fortune 500 companies, and in higher education.

This discussion will provide an overview of the capabilities of Cornell's Network Quarantine solutions, outline the objects and requirements that supported the decision to invest in this solution, and use the arrival of new students this past fall as an example of how this system is currently being used. Future directions and current developments will also be shared. Finally, some identified operational cost savings as a result of this technology will be shared.
