Brian D. Voss leads LSU’s IT organization, Information Technology Services, as it develops key infrastructure and services in support of advancing the university’s flagship agenda. His unit is responsible for the operation and support of the extensive computing, network, and application services functions that support student learning, faculty teaching, research, administration, and the broader IT infrastructure in place at the Baton Rouge campus. Voss has more than 20 years of leadership experience in the IT field, both in higher education and in the private sector, spanning operations and production services, application development, user support, and telecommunications. Previously at Indiana University, he was the associate vice president for information technology (telecommunications), the executive investigator on the Teragrid grant, the chief operating officer for the Pervasive Technology Labs, and served in IT support for 10 years. Voss is an oft-published author of papers and articles on a variety of IT subjects and has presented at dozens of technical and managerial conferences over the past decade. Louisiana State University CIO Brian Voss will share his university’s experiences in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. LSU (and IT at LSU) played a key role, providing a central point for relief and response functions and supporting recovery of IT operations for affected campuses. Katrina’s devastation should alert CIOs throughout higher education of the need to think about disaster recovery and business continuity planning with a broader perspective, including how we might leverage growing cyberinfrastructure and collaborative partnerships.
