EDUCAUSE Live! August 2, 2007 1:00 p.m. ET (12:00 p.m. CT, 11:00 a.m. MT, 10:00 a.m. PT); runs one hour Cyberinfrastructure: A Campus Perspective on What It Is and Why You Should CareSpecial Guest
Peter Siegel is vice provost for information and educational technology and CIO at UC Davis, where he is responsible for providing the leadership necessary to ensure the effective and strategic deployment of information and educational technology to the campus's academic and administrative operations and for coordinating technology between the Davis campus and the UC Davis Health System. An expert in university information and learning technologies, he manages the myriad forms of IT used throughout the campus, including computing systems and data, voice, and video communication services. Previously, Siegel was CIO at the University of Illinois and was director of academic information technology at the Iowa State University of Science and Technology before joining Illinois. He also spent more than 25 years at Cornell University in positions of increasing responsibility. Throughout his career, Siegel has been involved in both national and state professional organizations, as well as in nationally recognized technology partnerships with other major research universities. He serves on the EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Security Task Force Executive Committee, works with ACE and EDUCAUSE on security policy issues, and speaks regularly on computer privacy and security issues, collaboration technologies, and the role of technology planning in the academy. SummaryYour host, Steve Worona, will be joined by Peter Siegel, and the topic will be "Cyberinfrastructure: A Campus Perspective on What It Is and Why You Should Care." In March 2007, the National Science Foundation issued its final report, Cyberinfrastructure Vision for 21st Century Discovery. Though focused on the NSF, the report is an excellent starting point for campus-level planning. More than a support infrastructure for high-end researchers, cyberinfrastructure (CI) is critical to the humanities and social sciences as well as undergraduate and lifelong learning. It is becoming increasingly clear that CIOs and campus technical leaders from across the spectrum must consider the rapid rate of change (and significant costs) of CI as part of their jobs. In this forum, Siegel will share some thoughts on the campus view of the impact of CI, how we gain support from key stakeholders (like the faculty), and how we move forward in this space.
