Join us for an overview of state and regional networks, followed by a discussion of the individual missions, organizational structures, and planned activities of both the Quilt and StateNets, highlighting areas of collaboration between the two organizations. StateNets is an EDUCAUSE working group consisting of public and nonprofit organizations that serve a substantial portion of the U.S. K–20 research and education community. The Quilt is a coalition of our country’s major advanced regional R&E network organizations.

Learn more about the initiatives of the Security Task Force, including progress in strategic areas such as executive commitment and action, data privacy and security, effective practices and solutions, information sharing mechanisms, and new tools and technologies. Attendees are also invited to bring questions and suggestions regarding efforts to improve IT security in higher education. Volunteer opportunities will also be described.

In July 2007 EDUCAUSE convened a national meeting to discuss how CI can function on campuses, which generated a set of CI priorities, strategies, and tactics for EDUCAUSE and its members, including focus on support for research, university leadership's role in the strategic planning for a robust CI on campus, and the need for a sustainable CI funding model. Come prepared to work as you learn more about the CCI's current projects and how you can become more engaged with this effort.

The Identity Management Working Group, sponsored by Net@EDU, provides a forum for all topics related to identity management, including procedures, technologies, products, administration, prototypes, projects, and business models. Join us at the working group meeting to review the group's activities and to brainstorm hot topics (and hot solutions!) for your identity management initiatives, from beginners to experts.

State Education Network leaders gather each summer to exchange information and strategize on projects for the upcoming year.

Campus IT leaders are facing unprecedented demands for the support of high-performance computing, storage, communications, and related infrastructure for research. The new EDUCAUSE Working Group on Campus Cyberinfrastructure is working with the community to develop strategies and business models to address these exciting challenges.

The Net@EDU Integrated Communications Strategies (ICS) Working Group continues to track convergent services in higher education. Results of several surveys of institutions engaged in convergent communications efforts suggest that we are witnessing an evolutionary rather than revolutionary phenomenon. The results of the 2006 survey and several longitudinal implications will be presented in this session.

The NPC will hold an open meeting to review a variety of current networking issues of interest to the community, including CALEA, Network Neutrality, Universal Service Fund, and Municipal Networking. This session will discuss the ongoing work on the telecommunications act by Congress, and interpretation of the FCC's order extending CALEA to the Internet by the Justice Department and the courts, potential impact on the network, and ways our community can get involved.

All Net@EDU members are encouraged to attend this meeting to hear the latest updates from the Net@EDU working groups, including the EDUCAUSE/Internet2 Security Task Force. Plans for the Annual Tempe Meeting in February 2007 will also be reviewed. Please RSVP to Valerie Vogel if you plan to attend.

The Net@EDU StateNets CEOs meet annually every summer to share their experiences and related challenges in running education and research networks. This meeting also provides the StateNets community the opportunity to identify areas of collaboration and establish a strategic plan for the upcoming scholastic calendar year.

The chairs of the BPG and ICS Working Groups will talk about their groups contributions to comments before the Federal Communications Commission on CALEA and IP-Enabled Services as well as how the broader EDUCAUSE community can help influence the rewrite of the Telcommuications Act.

The topics will be Cellular/VoIP/Wi/Fi integration in the morning and 802.16/802.20 in the afternoon. Vendors that have agreed to make presentations are: Cisco, Avaya/Motorola/Proxim, Intel and Flarion. There will also be a presentation from Brad Noblet of Dartmouth about their current integration projects.

This forum will focus on the pressing federal IT issues including higher education obligations under CALEA, the future regulation of VOIP and revisiting the Telecommunications Act of 1996. The BPG Steering Committee will also update attendees on its efforts to engage Congress, the FCC and the presidential campaigns on this issue. It is imperative higher education has a cohesive strategy for articulating the importance of broadband networks. The BPG forums provide a focal point for ensuring your ideas are conveyed to key policymakers.
