Nov 04The Quilt and StateNets: An Update on R&E Regional and State Networks

Join us for an overview of state and regional networks, followed by a discussion of the individual missions, organizational structures, and planned activities of both the Quilt and StateNets, highlighting areas of collaboration between the two organizations. StateNets is an EDUCAUSE working group consisting of public and nonprofit organizations that serve a substantial portion of the U.S. K–20 research and education community. The Quilt is a coalition of our country’s major advanced regional R&E network organizations.

In July 2007 EDUCAUSE convened a national meeting to discuss how CI can function on campuses, which generated a set of CI priorities, strategies, and tactics for EDUCAUSE and its members, including focus on support for research, university leadership's role in the strategic planning for a robust CI on campus, and the need for a sustainable CI funding model. Come prepared to work as you learn more about the CCI's current projects and how you can become more engaged with this effort.

The Net@EDU Integrated Communications Strategies (ICS) Working Group continues to track convergent services in higher education. Results of several surveys of institutions engaged in convergent communications efforts suggest that we are witnessing an evolutionary rather than revolutionary phenomenon. The results of the 2006 survey and several longitudinal implications will be presented in this session.

Aug 08Network Policy Council (NPC) Open Meeting

The NPC will hold an open meeting to review a variety of current networking issues of interest to the community, including CALEA, Network Neutrality, Universal Service Fund, and Municipal Networking. This session will discuss the ongoing work on the telecommunications act by Congress, and interpretation of the FCC's order extending CALEA to the Internet by the Justice Department and the courts, potential impact on the network, and ways our community can get involved.

This forum will focus on the pressing federal IT issues including higher education obligations under CALEA, the future regulation of VOIP and revisiting the Telecommunications Act of 1996. The BPG Steering Committee will also update attendees on its efforts to engage Congress, the FCC and the presidential campaigns on this issue. It is imperative higher education has a cohesive strategy for articulating the importance of broadband networks. The BPG forums provide a focal point for ensuring your ideas are conveyed to key policymakers.
