Portland State University Office of Information Technologies Data Warehouse Architect Position Summary This position will serve as the lead for strategic development and design as it applies to the architecture of data mining and warehousing for the campus-wide solution. The person filling this position will work with key administrative positions defining data mining/warehousing requirements, modeling, and standards. This person will also work closely with the data warehouse trainer, central IT analyst programmers, and have some interaction with the user community in support of the application. This position reports to the Technical Team Manager of the office of Information Systems, one of five units in the office of Information Technologies. Position Responsibilities: Architect, Design, and Develop Data Mining & Warehouse Solutions - Consult with University key administrative positions and faculty analyzing needs, architecting & developing technical solutions to meet those data mining and warehouse needs; assist with development of user test plans; and documenting the solution both technically and for user reference - Provide architecture design, development and support in data modeling, db design, and report structures - Develop, test, debug and document new applications using appropriate tools. - Serve on team responsible for design and implementation of development and data standards - Maintain communication with users on the effectiveness of delivered solutions and refine systems accordingly - Ensure minimal downtime to the user community - Coordinate with other units, both within and outside the University, to ensure the security, integrity and validation of data. Maintain, Trouble-shoot and Upgrade Data Warehouse Application - Work with technical and non-technical teams to implement, maintain and/or enhance the data warehouse application, data models, and other integrated system products as required - Program, test, debug and document modifications/enhancements using appropriate tools - Develop specifications for developing those solutions - Maintain communication with users concerning current product performance and future needs - Tune applications and processes for optimal performance Serve as a technical resource and/or as a technical lead for project teams on complex projects and to other OIT personnel Evaluate, develop, and document emerging tools, technologies, and standards as it relates to modeling, mining and warehousing; analyze and make recommendations regarding feasibility; prepare related reports. Assist with training by coordinating and supervising the creation of general user training materials, tools and instructional courses Ensure system security, data integrity, and the privacy of sensitive data. Provide support to Director of IS as needed in system changes and special projects. Required Education, Experience and Qualifications: - Bachelor's Degree and five years appropriate technical experience required, with a Master Degree desired; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. - Ability to diagnose/resolve technical problems independently and to lead development and implementation of new and complex solutions. - Ability to manage all aspects of a project and project team whose success will have a significant financial impact to the Institution. - Able to technically support all areas of responsibility; typically serving as the end of technical problem escalation chain. - Significant experience in data mining/warehousing architecture and model design, and knowledge of ETL methodologies and standards. Preference to those candidates with experience in both modeling and ETL. - Extensive knowledge and experience programming with Oracle tools, SQL, PL*SQL, and with Unix shell scripting. - Ability to work in fast-paced, production environment and to provide occasional evening and/or weekend support. - Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with technical staff as well as non-technical users. - Able to work with sensitive/confidential information and to handle such information as required by Federal, State, and OIT regulations/policies. - Group leadership and project implementation skills. Salary and Benefits This is a full-time, 12 month position with an annual 1.0 FTE salary range of $70,000 - $75,000 plus an excellent benefits package including fully paid healthcare, a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or one dependent at any of the Oregon University System universities.
