The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) was founded in 1961, and is one of the largest private, non-profit biomedical research facilities in the world with over 3,000 employees. At the forefront of basic biomedical science, the Institute has made major contributions to the betterment of health and the human condition. Working in La Jolla, CA, the Database Administrator will maintain and enhance relational database systems and programs in a manner which directly and continually support the technology needs of the Kellogg School of Science and Technology Graduate Program, as well as its students on both the California and Florida campuses. The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: the implementation of a student records MySQL relational database in a UNIX/LINUX environment and convert existing paper and automated records to that database; operate, maintain and enhance a web-enabled student application process and system; provide end-user training and hands-on technical support to Graduate School staff members; build "wikis" and other information sharing applications for the students and faculty in a constantly evolving environment; develop and maintain effective working relationships with individual faculty members, IT Services professionals, and external consultants to ensure a robust IT infrastructure and applications to the Graduate School; and work with students in the development of their learning assessment "portfolios" or other tools to measure and document their educational progress. Requires a Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems technology, or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been attained. Requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, including 3+ years operating in a LINUX/UNIX, database-driven and/or web-based applications environment, as well as solid knowledge of MySQL relational databases, testing, query-writing and system maintenance; general theoretical knowledge of relational database management programs and systems helpful. Familiarity with Windows-based applications required. Knowledge of and proficiency in HTML, PHP and MySQL, as well as Web 2.0 and AJAX; knowledge of and/or experience with UNIX shell scripting, JAVA, PERL, XML, CSS, and graphic design are a plus. Knowledge of and experience with performing data quality assurance and testing and data validation procedures. Experience in a higher education setting and hands-on experiences with data sharing tools is a plus as is exposure to uPortal, content management systems and building or developing wikis and SharePoint or similar applications. Experience with online learning management systems used in higher education (e.g., Blackboard, WebCT Vista, Moodle, or Sakai) helpful. Project management experience; knowledge of and/or experience with web-content management systems (CMS) is preferred. Strong analytical, problem solving written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent customer service orientation and the ability to work effectively with staff and students from diverse cultural backgrounds, languages and nationalities. Ability to understand and apply good application security practices. Must be able to work independently and in a team/project-oriented environment.
