DEAN, SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS Marist College
Marist College is seeking a visionary leader to serve as Dean for the School of Computer Science and Mathematics who, working with faculty, administration and outside constituencies, will establish the School as a center of academic excellence, develop new programs, generate new revenue streams, and participate in the Joint Study Project with IBM. The Dean administers an academic unit comprised of over 65 full-time and part-time faculty, 485 undergraduate majors, and 150 graduate students. The School is composed of the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, and the Department of Mathematics, and offers the following programs: Bachelor's degrees in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Mathematics, Computer Mathematics; Master of Science degrees in Software Development, Information Systems; 5-year BS/MS in Computer Science/SD, 5-year BS/MS in Computer Science/IS. The Dean is expected to demonstrate a successful career in teaching and scholarship appropriate to her/his field, and/or relevant industry or government experience. It is further expected that the Dean's leadership will foster a cooperative interdisciplinary atmosphere, with a commitment to collaborative and collegial decision making. The Dean will be actively involved in College recruitment efforts and in fundraising for the School. Interest and experience in on-line education are preferred. The School places its first emphasis on quality teaching. Significant emphasis is also placed on scholarship, and the Dean is expected to support these efforts by fostering the professional development of the faculty and by securing support for research and equipment. The School of Computer Science and Mathematics has access to the College's mainframe computer (an IBM System 390 running VM/ESA, OS/390 and Linux/390, an IBM RS/6000 SP running AIX and over 500 computers in over 20 labs), the College-wide network (including full Internet access), and several PC labs. In addition, the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems maintains its own Object-Technologies and Networking labs. The Marist College technology base was developed through a joint study with the IBM Corporation. Currently the College is in the second phase of the joint study. Research is being conducted in the areas of streaming media, digital library, knowledge management systems, and e-commerce applications. Marist has also established a major Linux Research and Development Center and is in the process of establishing a special training program in an S390 environment. Marist is also leading major efforts to train professionals in e-commerce with on-line courses in Linux, Java, XML, C++ and others.
