The Pennsylvania State University's College of Medicine seeks applications and nominations for a creative and dynamic Medical Librarian/Director for the George T. Harrell Medical Library to provide leadership in: Increasing integration of library resources and services into the academic, clinical, research, and community outreach missions of the Medical College; Increasing acquisition and application of digital resources and services to directly support teaching, learning and patient care; Developing virtual learning tools to facilitate use of information resources by faculty, students, and clinicians; Providing relevant integration of Library systems with point of care systems, content management systems, electronic repositories, and educational support tools; and Developing physical facilities to provide inviting and exciting spaces for student/faculty collaboration and learning. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Harrell Library is responsible for the successful planning, organization, policy development, implementation, and direction of all aspects of a dynamic research-oriented medical library with an emphasis on user-focused services. Under the administration of the Dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communication and the College of Medicine's Vice-Dean for Educational Affairs, major responsibilities include fostering effective working relationships within the College of Medicine and University Libraries, particularly in the area of the effective development and application of technology tools for teaching, learning, and outreach; management of library faculty; all library operations including budgeting, expenditures, and the appointment and supervision of library faculty and staff; oversight of library reference and instructional services, information technology, collection development, cataloging, and research. In addition, librarians are expected to devote time to research, scholarly activity, and service to the University and the profession. The Medical Library is a key component in the delivery of collections and services to the larger university community as well as the College of Medicine/MS Hershey Medical Center. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Applicants must have an MLS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program, and significant experience in medical library administration, preferably at a major research university or medical institution. The successful candidate should have: Substantial library experience in progressively more responsible positions in medical or health science libraries; Demonstrated leadership in effecting change in a challenging and complex information environment; A management style that is inclusive and collaborative and that empowers others to excel; Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate information technology applications and trends, and recent operational experience in development and use of technology in a dynamic teaching and research environment as well as in clinical applications; Significant experience in budgeting, collection development, and reference/instructional services; Knowledge of current trends in medical education; knowledge of collections and technical services; knowledge of information delivery associated with electronic point of care medical records; Effective supervisory experience and a demonstrated ability to work well with a diverse employee and user community and to work within a collegial environment; Strong analytical and decision-making skills; and excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Documented accomplishments in research, scholarship, service, and outreach. Desired: Candidates should qualify for immediate tenure upon appointment. THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MEDICINE: Established in 1963, the Penn State College of Medicine, located in Hershey, Pennsylvania, enrolled its first students in 1967. The College of Medicine confers the doctor of medicine degree and, in conjunction with the Penn State University's Graduate School, offers programs leading to a master of science degree with a major in laboratory animal medicine, health evaluation sciences, and homeland security, doctor of philosophy and master of science degrees with majors in anatomy, biochemistry and molecular biology, cell and molecular biology, microbiology and immunology, neuroscience, and pharmacology, and inter-college graduate degree programs in bioengineering, genetics, integrative biosciences, and physiology.
