POSITION: The Director of Computing and Communications Services will work under the direction of the Vice Provost for Information Resources and C.I.O. and manage the areas of computing, networking and telecommunications services. The position is responsible for all aspects of strategic planning, budget, design, implementation, maintenance, and support of the computer center facility, enterprise servers and systems, and network and telecommunications facilities and services for all faculty, staff and students at CSU, Chico. The position will manage operational budgets of approximately $3.2 million and provide strategic budget analysis, recommendations, and planning for all one-time and on-going strategic technology projects for computing services, network, and telecommunications initiatives.

Some specific responsibilities include managing: enterprise server farm with approximately 90 servers running combination of Windows, Linux, UNIX, Solaris operating systems; campus email and Web services for approximately 19,000 users; Windows domain services; approximately 6000 node data network and network enabling services (e.g., DNS, DHCP, RADIUS); 3000 line PBX and voice mail; computer center facility and disaster recovery; call accounting/billing for all campus telephone expenses; inter/intrabuilding copper/fiber cable plant infrastructure and communications rooms for approximately 68 buildings; charge back centers for all installation and maintenance of voice and data services, and for server and application hosting services; and campus and CSU system-wide committee memberships.

The Director will prioritize unit responsibilities and strategic goals and objectives; hire, train, and supervise staff; and perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Requires bachelor's degree in computer science, MIS, or a related discipline; 10+ years of current experience supporting computing systems in a mid to large-size environment; and 5-10 years of supervisory experience. (Networking and telecommunications systems support experience preferred.)
Candidate must have demonstrated experience managing and providing strong leadership in a rapidly changing technical environment; strong organizational skills; 5-10 years budget management experience; and excellent interpersonal skills. Position requires extensive first-hand knowledge of enterprise-class servers and services, with additional data networking and telecommunications knowledge and experience preferred. Must possess the demonstrated ability to: predict and assess real-world technical trends for appropriate application in a mixed platform computing environment; coordinate and work with multiple service areas across campus; and evaluate, assess, and address campus computing, network and telecommunications trends and needs. The candidate must possess knowledge of industry trends and developments (hardware and software) and the application of those trends into the campus environment. Requires the ability to: creatively problem solve; develop innovative solutions; write and speak clearly and effectively; meet deadlines; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students, and others; adjust to change (i.e., work environment, technology); function cooperatively and productively as a member of a unit; and establish goals and objectives. The incumbent will be expected to be dedicated to continuous learning and skill upgrading through college classes, certification courses, and/or other training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The incumbent will be required to pass a fingerprinting clearance. If education was a qualifying factor for this position, a conditional offer of employment will be made to the successful candidate pending receipt of a sealed, official transcript providing evidence of educational attainment.

PREFERENCES: Preference will be given to applicant's with: a master's degree; knowledge and experience running charge back services; and broad knowledge of campus and CSU system-wide policies as they apply to enterprise servers/services, networking and telecommunications. Experience in a university/educational environment preferred.

The salary will be commensurate with education and experience. The position includes an attractive benefits package, including sixteen hours per month vacation accrual and tuition fee waiver. This is a full-time, 12-month management position and the conditions of employment are governed by the California State University Management Personnel Plan. Under this plan employees are subject to normal management reviews and serve at the pleasure of the University President.
