The Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC) provides shared information technology services to support the libraries of eight universities in the Washington, DC area, including George Washington, Georgetown, American, Catholic, Gallaudet, George Mason, Marymount, and the University of the District of Columbia. (See http://www.wrlc.org). WRLC systems integrate multiple hardware and software platforms into a common research portal available to more than 75,000 students and faculty.

WRLC seeks a Director of Information Technology who can enhance current services and provide leadership during the evolution to next-generation library systems in a consortial setting.

The Director of IT is a key member of the WRLC management team who provides strategic planning and hands-on operational management for information technology services, including:

* Develops long- and short-term technology plans in collaboration with member universities to identify and implement services to support library and academic research requirements
* Plans and manages major software projects including systems implementation, integration, and development
* Plans and controls staffing and technology acquisitions to support the needs of the consortium and its members in a cost-effective manner
* Prepares and administers the operating budget for information technology expenditures totaling approximately $2 million annually
* Oversees support and development for the current mix of commercial software products including an Oracle RDBMS, library catalog management system, federated search, and link resolver (Ex Libris Voyager, MetaLib and SFX); open source systems such as DSpace, MySQL, and Apache httpd and Tomcat; and locally-developed Java web applications and middleware.

The Director of IT reports to the Executive Director and supervises a staff of six including the Manager of IT Operations, Manager of Systems (Oracle DBA), two programmers, and two network/server administrators.

This is a small organization with plenty of opportunity for hands-on involvement.

Requirements:

* 5+ years experience in a high-level IT management position responsible for data center operation, and development and operation of major systems
* Ability to effectively manage multiple simultaneous initiatives using project management methodologies
* Ability to recruit, hire, train, and lead information technology staff
* Strong written and oral communication skills and demonstrated ability to work as a team player in a collaborative and decentralized environment
* Bachelors degree required; Masters degree preferred

Highly Desirable: Experience directing IT services for a library or higher-education organization. Proficiency with Unix, relational databases, web services, and open-source alternatives. Awareness of trends and standards related to library technology such as the OpenURL framework and OAI-PMH.
