Description:

 

Administers all activities related to computerized databases such as data modeling, database optimization, implements schema changes with the ability to interpret and write complex T-SQL queries using SQL Server 2005.  Tests and implements new versions of DBMS software, application software, and other software related to DBMS administration. Designs logical and physical databases or reviews description of changes to database design to understand how changes to be made affect physical database (how data is stored in terms of physical characteristics such as location, amount of space, and access methods.) Establishes physical database parameters; calculates optimum values for database parameters such as amount of computer memory to be used by database. Modifies database programs to increase processing performance, referred to as performance tuning. Projects long-range requirements for database administration in conjunction with other managers in the information systems function as well as business function managers. Designs and oversees project development of university wide applications by providing direction to team members, assigns tasks, performing code reviews to identify potential performance issues and trains team members on best practices. Directs programmers and analysts to make changes to database management system and provides technical assistance and training to new employees and users. Specifies user access level for each segment of one or more data items such as insert, replace, retrieve, or delete data; specifies which users can access databases and what data can be accessed by user. Creates database structures for a data warehouse environment. Implements high availability solutions for University wide databases that require 24x7 availability. Ensures data recoverability by implementing backup policies and procedures and designs and tests disaster recovery strategies. Creates project strategies and reviews project documentation. Prepares activity and progress reports regarding the database management section. Confers with co-workers to determine impact of database changes on other systems and staff cost for making changes to database. Purchases and inventories supplies and equipment for assigned area(s). Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety regulations. Assists with special projects, as needed. Complies with all State and University policies.
