IT Administrator II for Research Computing for the Systems Technical Services Team
The University of Tennessee
 
JOB PURPOSE: This position supports the Office of Information Technology research computing program. Position provides technical support and expertise for all high performance computing (HPC) program operations. This involves the design and administration of large distributed computational resources. 
 
REQUIRED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
o    This position is directly responsible for the research HPC systems used 24 x 7 by the University community.
o    Responsible for support to operational environments for various types of software programs in efficiently and effectively supporting fulfilling business objectives.
o    Provide system administrative functions necessary to provide a stable HPC environment for the university.
 
Required Qualifications
Education: A Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field or at least five years of related experience in information technology focused on systems management.
JOB SKILLS
REQUIRED
o    Strong Linux system administration skills (DHCP, DNS, Apache, PXE, NFS, NIS,
o    Knowledge of best practices for hardware/operating system configuration management, hardening techniques, and patch management.
o    Good leadership, organizational and planning, analytical and problem resolution, and communication skills.
o    Experience in providing customer support.
o    Hands on expertise in more than one user computer operating system such as Windows 2000/2003 server, Solaris, Linux, etc.
o    Experience and basic understanding of common networking methodologies and protocols such as DNS/DHCP and TCP/IP routing.
 
Preferred
o    At least 2 years IT related experience in the administration of large distributed cluster systems.
o    Experience in designing and administering large Linux computing and storage cluster systems
o    Experience with high performance computing techniques (MPI, data parallelization, Monte-Carlo)
o    Experience programming in C, C++, Fortran, Perl, or shell scripting
o    Experience with configuration of Ethernet and Infiniband networking
o    Experience with administration of Sun Grid Engine or other batch-queue system
o    Experience with design, development and deployment of HPC strategies
 
A retirement program fully paid by the State of Tennessee is a condition of employment for all regular full-time employees of the University. Regular full-time employees are eligible for several group insurance options. The University pays 80 percent of the premium for the medical coverage of the insurance plan.
