Job Title: Product/Market Manager – Membership

General Description:

The product/market manager is responsible for developing and implementing marketing plans to grow assigned market segments and products/services in a financially sustainable manner.  The product/market manager will be data-driven and use market research to recommend product/service development for assigned markets.  In doing so, the product/market manager will develop compelling, rational business plans which guide the investment of available EDUCAUSE resources, when necessary.  S/he will also facilitate product/service development via leading or participating in teams assigned to projects post-approval. 

The product/market manager is an exceptional communicator, capable of leading cross-functional teams and facilitates/coordinates the development and communication of multiple membership products and benefits at any one time.  S/he is required to communicate with multiple levels in the organization and be effective at building consensus.  

Accountabilities:

  • Leads creation and implementation of product/service/benefit development, marketing and communication strategies for membership
  • Ensures stability and growth of EDUCAUSE membership in a financially sustainable manner; assesses financial implications, including profitability and viability, for all decisions related to membership
  • Identifies membership and segment market opportunities
  • Improves membership experience continually via purchasing experience, benefit mix, communication and volunteer engagement
  • Works in tandem with internal stakeholders; effectively collaborates with stakeholders and various teams in a matrix-like relationship
  • Explores membership segments and emerging and international markets
  • Ensures thorough definition and alignment of product/service development requirements and resources for membership

Capabilities:

  • Demonstrates in-depth experience, knowledge and skills in product/market/segment management
  • Matrix management skills needed to work with Executive Team, stakeholders, members, and Marketing
  • Demonstrates ability to lead cross-functional teams without relying on direct reporting lines; strong project and people management skills
  • Demonstrates in-depth knowledge and skills in membership benefit development, member communication and volunteer engagement
  • Understands how to manage product lifecycles
  • Able to make logical, data-driven recommendations to the membership product and benefit mix to achieve sustainable economic success
  • Able to understand complex functional and financial situations within the membership product; able to pay attention to and manage the details of tasks which affect the delivery of the membership experience
  • Collaborates well with individuals and departments at multiple levels
  • Capable of building broad-based support and/or persuades others to enable smooth pathways to product development
  • Clearly understands how to acquire resources to support execution of membership strategies and development efforts
  • Demonstrates deep customer expertise
  • Encourages informed risk-taking and acts as a catalyst for membership product innovation at EDUCAUSE; generates practical, sustainable and creative options to solve problems and create business opportunities, while maximizing existing resources

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing or business related field
  • 5+ years experience in managing business operations, business development, or marketing, preferably in product development efforts for associations, higher education, publishing, or other content-oriented industries
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, leadership, communication, and strategic thinking skills
