SENIOR SYSTEMS PROGRAMMER Information Technology Department 100% time, 12-month term Current hours: Monday - Friday, 7:30 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. OVERVIEW: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of specialized duties involved in the planning, design, installation, configuration, operation, monitoring, maintenance and repair of computer hardware and software applications in College large systems servers, storage area network (SAN) and Local Area Network (LAN) environments; assist with various feasibility studies and program design and modification projects. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Perform a variety of specialized duties involved in the planning, installation, configuration, modification and maintenance of computer hardware and software applications in College large systems/database servers and LAN environment; schedule and perform system and software updates and upgrades; configure hardware and software to assure proper computer operations Inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve LAN and large system servers/database server, hardware and software application malfunctions; asses system performance and identify and resolve problems; monitor systems to assure smooth computer operations; modify system configuration s appropriate; investigate and resolve user technology problems Collaborate with other technology personnel in various feasibility studies and program design and modification projects to meet College needs, resolve data and operational problems, and provide for system enhancements; research and implement solutions Install new operating systems and software; test software and hardware and observe elements of the system for evidence of incorrect performance; make programming adjustments to existing operating systems as needed; maintain and repair operating system configuration Respond to user and management requests for system upgrades, maintenance and repairs; analyze requests for system and program additions, solutions and revisions; confer with users to determine system and program requirements, feasibility, operations problems and desired output Participate in planning, evaluating and recommending future configuration for operating systems and large systems/database servers and network hardware; research evaluate and purchase computer software as appropriate; provide recommendations concerning major hardware and software purchases Perform a variety of network administration activities such as establishing and maintaining user accounts and security applications as assigned; configure, monitor and maintain network connection with the Internet, monitor, maintain and assure security of network servers Participate in designing, coding, testing and implementing new computer programs for assigned large systems/database servers and LAN environments as directed; develop and maintain related documentation Provide training to College personnel concerning system operations, applications, malfunctions, troubleshooting and related practices, techniques and procedures; document system procedures for personnel and end users Communicate with personnel and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns Operate a variety of computers, servers, peripherals and specialized software Maintain various records related to assigned activities Maintain current knowledge of technological advances in computer system hardware and software Perform related duties as assigned MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Practices, procedures and techniques involved in the installation, configuration, operation, monitoring, maintenance and repair of computer hardware and software applications in large system servers/database servers and network environments Principles, methods and procedures of operating computers and peripheral equipment Principles, practices and methods of database structures, computer programming and system design. Manual instructions, sufficient to enable quick and accurate diagnosis of difficulties Principles, practices, procedures and equipment involved in network administration Applicable programming languages System utilities and design and program applications Database structures, applications and capabilities of assigned computer systems Computer hardware systems and software applications utilized by the College Installation and operation of various computer operating systems software. IBM AIX experience preferred Oral and written communication skills Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy Record-keeping techniques Skills and Abilities: Perform a variety of specialized duties involved in the planning, installation, configuration, modification and maintenance of computer hardware and software applications in College large system server/database server environment Inspect, troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve large system server/database server and LAN environments Participate in various feasibility studies and program design and modification projects to meet College needs, resolve data and operational problems, and provide for system enhancements Review, analyze and modify existing systems and programs as necessary Install, upgrade and configure various software applications and operating systems Participate in designing, coding, testing and implementing new computer programs as directed Maintain servers and perform a variety of network administration activities Operate computers and peripheral equipment properly and efficiently Meet schedules and time lines Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action Maintain various records related to work performed Work independently with little direction Maintain current knowledge of technological advances in the field Communicate effectively orally and in writing Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and three years experience involving the installation, maintenance and repair of computer hardware and software applications in a large system server/database server and network systems including work with program design and modification.
