JOB DESCRIPTION:
Established by UC Berkeley in 1891, UC Berkeley Extension is one of the largest and oldest continuing education operations in the United States. As a self-supporting organization, Extension offers more than 1,500 personal enrichment and professional development classes in multiple locations around the San Francisco Bay Area and online. Extension’s enrollments total approximately 31,000 annually.

The UC Berkeley Extension Online department is a part of the UC Berkeley Extension, the continuing education arm of the University of California, offering courses for college and professional credit, certificate programs in a variety of fields, and noncredit seminars and programs of professional and general interest. Administered by UC Berkeley Extension, UC Berkeley Extension Online currently offers more than 120 online courses.

Under the guidance of the Director, this position involves developing online course websites, electronic communications and instructional materials using web, audio, video, and other electronic media, which involves writing, editing, designing, production and coding. Confers with Online Course Developers, Instructional Designers, Online Course Builders, subject matter experts, web programming specialists, project directors and related staff in the preparation of proposed online course materials; verifies that proofing and formatting of copy conforms to online course specifications.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under direction from the Continuing Educator creates design and layout for online course websites. Includes digital text, graphics, animation, audio and video in online course sites.

Works with the Continuing Educator, Instructional Designers, and Online Course Developers to understand the requirements, goals and needs of the online course website content and its pedagogical value.

Under the direction of the Continuing Educator assists with complex projects involving content management and learning management systems, digital media management, and assessment and tracking systems.

Keeps current with accessibility issues, compatibility issues, and emerging technologies as appropriate for online learning materials and management systems.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

Education, Training and Experience:
Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

Knowledge, Skills and ability:
Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, editorial style, and punctuation, including skill to write in a clear and lively style.
Thorough understanding of web development and technical languages and requirements of the assigned work.
Thorough knowledge of learning management systems and/or relevant web applications used for online course website production, and online learning computer application programs.
Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional online course websites that provide web content consistent with the campus message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives.
Thorough understanding of institutional processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for web communications in online course websites.
Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and/or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
Thorough interpersonal communication skills.
Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.
Thorough knowledge of multimedia software and development tools.
