Purpose of this Position:
Carleton College seeks an experienced, talented Senior Unix Systems Administrator/Network Security Administrator to join the Network Services group of Information Technology Services (ITS). This position shares responsibility with other network administration staff in the deployment, operations, upgrades and repair of server technology: currently over 70 servers: Linux, Solaris, Netware, Windows and VMware. The successful candidate will also help define, implement and enforce network security policy. The Senior Unix Administrator/Network Security Administrator reports to the Associate Director of Network Services.

Responsibilities:
 Responsible for Linux and Solaris systems administration including installation, operation, maintenance and documentation of software and networked servers.
 System diagnostics and troubleshooting, including analysis of ongoing performance, systems slowdowns and bottlenecks.
 Diagnose and troubleshoot system/network interaction.
 Ensure data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups.
 Deals with systems and network security including authentication and authorization.
 Investigates and follows up on system and network security breaches.
 Participates in network security configuration and monitoring.
 Identifies and promotes industry "best practices" in systems administration and network security.
 Administers campus e-mail systems, internal firewall, and enterprise back-up servers.
 Manages teams of students engaged in supporting internal servers and applications.
 Recommend and help establish policies on system use and services.
 Provide technical leadership to system administrators and other IT staff.
 Evaluate and/or recommend purchases.
 Participate in off-hours support (pagers).
 Some off-hours maintenance work is required. This work is typically done on Fridays between 6:00 PM and midnight.

Minimum Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's Degree plus six years experience (3 years as a Unix Administrator) or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to solve problems quickly and completely. Ability to identify tasks which require automation and automate them. A solid understanding of UNIX-based operating systems, TCP/IP networking concepts, networking/distributed computing environment concepts. Ability to program in an administrative language (Perl, Python, a shell).

Preferred:
A degree in computer science or a related field. Extensive and recent Linux and/or Solaris administration experience. Programming background in any applicable language. Experience in IT support of higher education. Experience with network security in higher education.
