Works with the IT Systems group, stakeholders, and end users to determine system specifications, functionality, and working parameters for hardware/software compatibility and system security. Provides support for installation, operation and maintenance of software and networked servers and workstations; system diagnostics and troubleshooting, including analysis of ongoing performance and system/network interaction. Specification, design and implementation of Unix/Linux operating system-based projects such as accounts database, mail systems, LDAP/identity management, and secure storage/distribution of data. Assess needs, design strategies and refine/update systems security including authentication, authorization, and secure web access. Work with vendors, supervise contractors, potentially lead coworker subgroups, as well as various Harvard entities to implement and coordinate intergroup projects. Collaborate with other FASCS groups. Reports to the Director of IT Systems. BSCS degree or equivalent, including 7 years in a Unix system administration environment. High level of ability supporting various flavors of Linux and Sun Solaris systems. Programming experience in shell, C, and Perl desirable. Knowledge of TCP/IP networking protocols. Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to maintain a reliable and methodical approach to tasks and documentation; strong desire to implement growing range of services. Experienced in understanding the impact of technical change in a complex, interoperating environment. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Strong documented expertise in one of the following areas is required: design, implementation, and maintenance of large scale NAS/SAN storage architectures; design, implementation, and maintenance of multinode clusters for various scientific (e.g. biocomputation, genome, physics) compute requirements; system virtualization strategies and implementation in an enterprise production environment.
