Visit the university's Web site at www.uwm.edu Job Duties Under the general supervision of the Operations Support Supervisor, the System Administrator is a specialist for the support and enhancement of the campus information systems infrastructure including hardware, software, operating systems, server virtualization (VMware), storage systems and backup/recovery systems. Duties include planning, designing, installing, configuring, maintaining, and optimizing hardware, software, operating systems, storage systems and backup/recovery systems. The System Administrator is responsible for monitoring, correcting, testing, and creating and updating documentation for infrastructure hardware and software, with the ultimate goal of providing highly available, reliable, secure, cost effective and innovative services for the campus community. These responsibilities are carried out in a team environment, working effectively with colleagues, leading and participating fully and creatively on teams. Relevant knowledge, skills and abilities include the ability to configure and support servers, storage, and tape subsystems using Linux, Windows and UNIX; the ability to configure and support virtual server environments; scripting language skills (Perl/Unix Shell); debugging, optimization tuning and troubleshooting skills; a thorough understanding of operating systems (both Linux and Windows environments), server architectures, storage subsystems and backup solutions; knowledge of security best practices; strong problem solving skills and a proven ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
