UNIX SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR Req. #23692 Tufts University, Somerville/Medford, MA Overview: The University Systems Group (USG) provides enterprise-wide information technology services, including electronic mail, web, directory, identity, and other UNIX/Linux-based services, to the Tufts community. Its members support and enhance existing services and infrastructure and develop new solutions as requirements change and technology innovations occur. USG seeks an individual with a solid understanding of core UNIX/Linux technologies who is committed to a team-oriented approach to fill its available UNIX Systems Administrator position. Description: The UNIX Systems Administrator position provides both operating system and application software systems administration services focused on operation, maintenance, and improvement of all Sun Solaris and other UNIX-like operating systems supported by the University Systems Group. The work required in this position includes: Supervised development of automated mechanisms to track computing assets; service requests and configuration management; developing, documenting, and executing manual support procedures; possessing and developing skills and knowledge of computing hardware, operating systems, and relevant applications used to support services offered by the USG to the Tufts University community. Clear communication is a key requirement of this position. Basic Requirements: • Bachelor’s degree • Minimum of four years of experience as a system administrator with at least one commercial version of the UNIX operating system, preferably Sun Solaris at version 9 or higher • In depth practical experience with UNIX-based systems and services, in a large-scale, heterogeneous Internet-connected environment • Should be conversant and experienced with systems installation, configuration, and maintenance, fundamentals of security, and the installation of third-party software • Experience writing scripts to support system administration functions in Perl and Bourne shell is required • The ability to produce scripts that interface well with non-technical people (php, modperl) is required • Familiarity with the basics of database functionality • Substantial knowledge of the use and management of the MySQL database application is required in order to support several system administration tools used by USG • Substantial knowledge of one or more of the software applications used by USG to support electronic mail and directory services to the Tufts University community Preferred Qualifications: • A demonstrated ability to quickly absorb and integrate new information and learn new skills is strongly preferred. • In depth experience with a second operating system, preferably Linux, is strongly desired. Special Work Schedule Requirements: • Occasionally, evenings, weekends, early mornings, technical staff may be called upon to work on critical systems. • Team members are included in an on-call rotation 7x24 for approximately one in seven weeks, supporting all issues that arise in the USG. • Exact rotation frequency depends on staffing levels and accommodations of staff vacation requests, etc. Tufts University is an AA/EOE employer and actively seeks candidates from diverse backgrounds.
