The University of Florida (UF), a major public land-grant, sea grant, and space grant institution, is one of the five largest universities in the nation, and is the state's only member of the elite Association of American Universities (AAU). UF faculty attracts approximately $600 million annually in research and training grants, placing the university among the nation's leading research institutions. The state's oldest and most comprehensive university, UF is among the nation's most academically diverse universities, with 16 colleges offering 100 undergraduate degree programs, 200 graduate programs and 30 combined degree programs. Attracting and retaining the best undergraduate students in the nation is one of the university's top priorities. The University of Florida's Chief Information Officer has leadership and management responsibility for the integrated university-wide information technology organization. At the President's direction, UF spent a year developing an action plan for the future of UF IT. An integrated IT model is a result of that process, and the CIO position is being filled on a permanent basis for the first time. The plan ( http://www.it.ufl.edu/ufitactionplan/) was designed to improve IT governance, engagement, and core funding models, and to create an integrated IT organization operating under a single Chief Information Officer. The new UF IT organization is a federated system of core units and distributed IT. This integrated model retains the strength and dexterity of distributed IT while providing a basis for improved, well managed, sustainable and secure enterprise services, and more opportunities for collaborations, partnerships, and cost efficiencies. The capstone of the plan is to hire a new CIO. The Vice President and Chief Information Officer will be an accomplished information technology executive with a demonstrated track record of leadership and management within higher education, preferably at a notable research-level institution. The CIO will be immediately recognizable as a leader, possessing outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, able to establish credibility and rapport quickly with a broad set of stakeholders and constituencies. Experience managing a large, high-performing team is required. The ability to effectively work with multiple University communities is a necessity.
