Working Group Agendas

  • Campus Cyberinfrastructure
    February 6, 1:00–5:00 p.m. View Agenda >>
The mission of the Campus Cyberinfrastructure (CCI) working group is to help educational institutions develop institutional strategies and plan their resource deployment in this emerging and evolving technological landscape and to help their users harness and optimize the power and capabilities of these new integrated IT tools and systems for educational and research applications in higher education. What cyberinfrastructure issues are most prominent on your campus? Are you tapped into the latest federal grant opportunities? Come share your ideas and hear what the CCI working group is doing to address issues such as data retention services for researchers.
  • Identity Management
    February 6, 1:00–5:00 p.m. View Agenda >>
Identity Management is moving ahead rapidly. Shibboleth and InCommon are making great strides. Representatives from the banking and credit-card industries are sitting around the table with federal and state government agencies in the E-Authentication Partnership. The Credential Assessment Framework, developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, is being applied to an expanding federation of public and private institutions, including a number of campuses. The Identity Management Working Group will review these and other current activities of interest and chart a path for future action.
  • Joint Integrated Communications Strategies and Wireless Networking
    February 4, 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. View Agenda >>

The ICS and Wireless working groups have a fantastic lineup of topics and guest speakers for their Sunday joint meeting:

    • Skype on Campus: Issues, Problems, Possible Solutions
Kurt Sauer of Skype will be joining us (from London) to lead a discussion on how the various issues of Skype usage on campus can be resolved and how a stronger partnership with the higher education community can be forged. (Sunday, 10:00 a.m.)
    • The Future of Wireless: WiMAX, Wi-Fi, Cellular-Where Are We Headed?
Dewayne Hendricks will join us to discuss his experiences in developing a county-wide Wi-Fi project in New Mexico and what it has taught him about the future of Wi-Fi versus WiMAX. He will also share his views and his FCC experiences on the Wi-Fi/cellular integration debate, and which mode will prevail. Come join in what should prove to be a lively discussion. (Sunday afternoon, time TBD.)

Other topics include Bob Corbin on Ohio State's 10,000 Points of Access project, Steve Updegrove on the state of VoIP at Penn State, and Jose Valdes on the open source Asterisk program at Colorado State. Sessions start at 9:00 a.m. and run until the Super Bowl party at 4:00 p.m.

  • Network Policy Council
    February 4, 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
The Network Policy Council will hold an open meeting to review a variety of current networking issues of interest to the community, including CALEA, network neutrality, the Universal Service Fund, and municipal networking. This session will discuss ongoing work by Congress on the Telecommunications Act, interpretation of the FCC's order extending CALEA to the Internet by the Justice Department and the courts, the potential impact on the network, and ways our community can get involved.
  • StateNets
    February 6–8
The StateNets Working Group provides a forum for managers and executives in state education and research networks and their higher education partners to learn from each other how to serve better their customers and to deal more effectively with their policy and technical challenges. This year's meeting will feature discussion sessions on timely topical areas chosen by the StateNets Steering Committee, status reports from the StateNets Focus Groups, and presentations from nascent state education networks.
  • Wireless Networking
    February 6, 12:30 – 4:00 p.m.
What is happening with wireless on your campus? Are you providing wireless in the dorms? Are you maintaining conventional wiring also, or are you going completely wireless? Do you have a particular problem that needs a creative solution? Do you need higher density wireless coverage? Or higher speed? Have those latest and greatest products lived up to their promise? Come compare notes with your fellow leaders in wireless campus solutions and help contribute to our new library of effective practices.
