Regional Optical Networking

Regional Optical Networks (RONs) are already playing an active role in higher education research and education. In many instances they are also serving K-12, State Agencies and other organizations. The StateNets Regional Optical Networking Focus Group has been charged to facilitate a better understanding of the increasing role of RONs, and their relationship to state education networks. In particular the RON Focus Group will investigate the following issues:

What is the current status of regional networks?
What is the status of current peering agreements between regional and state networks?
What is the strategy for peering regional and state fiber resources and how does it fit with Internet2 and National Lambda Rail?
Identify architectures used by these RONs and their future plans.
Address the issue of Policy and Architecture issues that will be faced as we envision partnerships within RONs.
