Access Control to Workstations in Computer Labs
| Title: | Access Control to Workstations in Computer Labs (ID: EPS266) | | Author(s): | Max Soloviev (California State University, East Bay) | | Topics: | Access Control, Computing Labs, Security Implementation | | Origin: | Community Contributions (2004) | | Type: | Effective Practices | | Abstract: | California State University, Hayward (CSUH) determined there was a need to prevent unauthorized users from accessing workstations in publicly available computer labs. The system would need to unlock the station at check-in and lock it at check-out. Additional concerns about hackers trying to use lab machines for spam or virus distribution made user identification and tracking imperative. To meet these needs, CSUH instituted a computer lab management system that provides centralized check-in, workstation locking, and surveillance.
