Economic Downturn - 81 Resources
Overview
Web Seminars and Podcasts - June 16: Strategies for New Circumstances. In the nine months since the economic downturn hit higher ed with full force, the resulting retrenching on our campuses has forced IT professionals to think in new ways about what they do. We have learned that the viability of our institutions cannot be taken for granted. The way we work as IT organizations has begun changing and will continue to alter dramatically in the years to come. To succeed, we will need to focus our attention on two key campus relationships: the intersections between IT leaders and campus chief business officers (CBOs), and the relationship between central and distributed IT services. CBOs focus on money and efficiency; CIOs have a broad campus perspective and keep a pulse on automating business processes. This natural relationship between CBO and CIOs must be nurtured. Similarly, the relationship between central and distributed campus IT services should be closely examined to maximize what we have and what we do. We are past the point where we can afford overlap and role ambiguity. We must figure out how to communicate and partner better to ensure that, together, we deliver the best possible services for our institutions. Bruce Maas, CIO of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will lead a lively discussion of what we've learned so far in navigating the rough waters of 2009 and future strategies for IT organizations. This seminar has been archived.
- May 11: How Technology Will Reshape Academe After the Economic Crisis. If indeed a crisis is a terrible thing to waste, future generations of learners will no doubt look back at the global economic crisis of 2008-09 and reflect on which institutions were agile enough to bring the wisdom of its scholars together with the acumen of its technology leadership and the ingenuity and determination of the universities leadership team to make a difference. In this webinar, Lev Gonick, Vice President for Information Technology Services/CIO at Case Western Reserve University, will explore a range of technological-informed 'opportunities' from the pragmatics of shared services models to 'transformational' arcs of activities in internationalization and open education resources. This seminar has been archived.
- April 17: The Dynamic Duo: CFO/CIO Partnerships for Surviving the Economic Downturn. As the belts get tightened in higher education, a strong and mutually trusting relationship with the Chief Financial Officer is critically important. Join Reagan Ramsower (CFO) and Pattie Orr (CIO) from Baylor University for a lively EDUCAUSE Live! discussion of ways to strengthen CFO/CIO partnership and trust.. Explore the mysteries of how to best communicate your case to the CFO. Join the presenters as they discuss their own collaboration and share tips on how you can form your own partnership. This seminar has been archived
- March 17: The Economy's Impact on Higher Education. EDUCAUSE is pleased to launch a new Spotlight Series of webinars focused on current economic issues. Kicking off the first in our series of events will be William Jarvis, managing director and head of research at the Commonfund Institute, presenting “The Economy's Impact on Higher Education,” a review of the current economic situation and its effect on colleges and universities. This seminar has been archived.
- March 9: The Economic Downturn, IT, and Higher Education We will look at the economic downturn from the perspective of a chief finance officer: Fred Rogers of Carleton College. We will also focus on what the stimulus package means for higher education IT with Terry Hartle, senior vice president for government and public affairs at ACE, the American Council on Education. After reviewing what members said they need from EDUCAUSE in these challenging times, we’ll open up the discussion for your suggestions. This seminar has been archived.
