ELI Annual Meetings are a unique opportunity to experiment with new technologies in a fun and low-pressure environment. At the 2009 Annual Meeting, attendees were plunged into the world of alternate reality gaming by a common challenge: to save Professor Rufus Bluth, a marine biologist whose controversial research into pink salmon populations put him in the crosshairs of a local petroleum company. Attendees were first introduced to Professor Bluth during a video interruption at the opening general session. A hidden URL led to Bluth’s research site, which included a series of hidden clues and puzzles to find his research. Clues throughout the meeting space helped fill in the details behind Bluth’s findings, his pursuers, and his “story.” Attendees began building virtual connections before arrive on site using Ning, an online service that lets users create their own social networks. The ELI 2009 Ning Network included affinity groups, discussion forums, and a real-time chat room where attendees could exchange clues for the ELI alternate reality game or comment on sessions. Now that the meeting has ended, attendees can continue to share resources or post images that capture their annual meeting experience. To learn more about Ning or how it might apply on your campus, check out ELI's recent technology brief, 7 Things You Should Know About Ning.
