| Title: | Computer Use Policies at Major U.S. Universities (ID: CSD1195) | | Author(s): | Susan Athey (Colorado State University) | | Topics: | Acceptable and Responsible Use Policies, Campus Policies, Censorship, Security Policies, Web Policies | | Origin: | Community Contributions (1999) | | Type: | Articles, Papers, and Reports | | Abstract: | The computer use policies of 71 state U.S. universities are analyzed for commonalities and differences. The most common policies regulate the use of e-mail, forbid illegal software copying, forbid interfering with normal operations, and forbid the use of computer resources for personal or financial gain. Additional policies address appropriate use of facilities, game playing, Web access, monitoring, and censorship. The policies vary from vague to specific and follow no pattern of topics. The policies lack information about how faculty, staff, and students are apprised of them and about changes which are made to them. | | View this resource: | |
