Abstract:The Justice Department recently released its long-awaited public accounting of how it has used its new law enforcement powers under the USA PATRIOT Act, which was adopted following the September 11 terrorist attacks. According to the report, agents have contacted about 50 libraries in the course of terrorism investigations, often at the invitation of librarians who noticed something suspicious. Librarians nationwide have voiced concern that the USA PATRIOT Act provisions constitute an invasion of patrons' privacy and civil liberties. Librarians dispute the numbers released by the Justice Department, however, believing far more than 50 libraries have been contacted. The House Judiciary Committee will hold an oversight hearing on June 5 to discuss the report. Attorney General John Ashcroft is scheduled to testify.
