Question 4.7 Details

If you bring your own computer to school, what kind of technical support can you expect from the campus?

Bringing your own computer to campus assures that you have unlimited access to a computer when you need it. This does not ensure success, however, unless you know that your computer can connect with the campus network and the Internet; that it runs the software required for courses and homework; and that you have an adequate level of support in setting up and maintaining your system and network connections, upgrading software, and general help in its use.

A campus should provide some mechanism for advice and help with all aspects of installation, troubleshooting, and upgrades. Note that this help may not be available for all types of computers and software on the market, and that not all types can be used to run the software required for assignments and homework. Campuses have found that they can significantly improve their overall level of support and student success by standardizing on one or a few types of computer systems. It is very important to investigate such campus recommendations or standards before purchasing your computer equipment for use on campus.
